A Mississippi lawmaker says racist comments recently attributed to him were taken out of context and supposed to be off the record.

State Rep. Gene Alday, a Republican, told The Clarion-Ledger he was against increased funding for education, in particular funding to improve literacy. During his explanation, Alday said he comes "from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call 'welfare crazy checks.' They don't work."

it's a racist statement all by itself, numbers or not. what kind of idiot thinks investing in education is a waste because 'blacks don't work and get crazy welfare checks'? the racist kind.

Anytime you distinguish by race, it is racist. For instance, "White men can't jump," is totally racist. Whether or not the statement reflects reality is irrelevant.

Well, he said "All" There's no stats that will support his claim. Now had he said, I come from a town where (insert % here) of black people are on welfare, it may be fine when discussing that specific subject. Now when discussing welfare and its fails and them blaming that on "all blacks" getting "crazy welfare checks" (not sure what that means), then yes its racist. Stats are not racist inherently. However, "rounding them up" or cherry picking certain stats and purposely ignoring other stats in a direct attempt to support a preconceived racist individual "observation" is also a racist. Racisim always comes down to believing one race to be inherently superior or inferior to another based on "personal observations" which are obviously not obtained using science.

I don't think education is a bad idea. I do think we waste a lot of money on silly stuff. My only question is, he made the statement that a disporporniate number of Blacks in his district were on Welfare. I just wondred if it's true or not. All I care about is the truth

It also boils down to how you perceive any certain race or class of people as well. Because for some reason, white people on welfare don't get called out.

If I was to bet....... I would bet that in fact, in this guys home town, there is in fact a higher percentage of blacks on welfare than whites. Now why? That's the hard question, ya know. Many reasons. Plenty of reasons to make someone on either side of the political spectrum scoff, but reasons nonetheless.

I will agree All, was tinted with racism. If it is true that most are then his statement stands. Now the reason why most are is where the problem lies. INMHO it is a mix of the hang over of white opression for years, and black apathy and years of living on the Govt.

In a follow on statement he said ""Yes, it's true that most of the blacks in my hometown are on welfare," Alday told the newspaper. "But they're good people. I don't have anything against anybody. I'm a straight-up guy. In my little town they had little civil rights walks and I was with them. I'm with everybody."

Marvin we have plowed this ground so many times. The problem is the disproportionate number of blacks on welfare. Blacks and whites on Welfare are almost even in number. Yet whites are 72% of the population and blacks are around 14%.

When it becomes a generational way of life it's wrong no mater what race you are .

Which is odd seeing that most people on welfare happen to be white.
