So my I-129F petition for my fiancée got approved on 12/31/14 and im just trying to get some info on how long to get a case# from NVC, are they backlogged, I just want to have some kind of idea. does USCIS send the approved petition to NVC as soon as it gets approved, because if that's the case it cant take that long from mail to get from Texas to New Hampshire.

It can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks to get to NVC get a case# then off to your embassy. Most people start calling NVC after 2 weeks to ask for case#.

It can take up to 8 weeks for NVC to receive your approved petition. For some it can go pretty quick and take about a week, but for others it can take a lot longer. I waited 5 weeks myself. The best thing to do, is just call the NVC every day until you get your case number.

No you won;t be able to login into the portal without it.

Not true. I just started the DS-160 today and didn't need my case # to start or save my work.

Edited to add: for K-1 visa applications you don't need it to log in. For other immigrant visas, you are correct.
