IMHO the op ed used by the OP is just another article filled with veiled racism. I suppose there is some pleasure to be derived by attempting to place a larger chip on someone else's shoulder...

http://www.racefiles.com/2013/08/19/why-are-asians-so-racist/

I get asked that question and various riffs on it like why do Asians hate black people? and why do Asians only stick with other Asians? all the time. While these questions may seem rude, I take them seriously, not least because they contain seeds of truth, even if theyre ultimately based on misinformation.

Before I get into what I meant by that, lets get real about racism. Racism is distinct from ordinary bias because it was created as the justification for and original blueprint of a society in which race and class were pretty much the same thing. Class is how wealth and therefore power is organized. So, race and power are inextricable. And while parts of the original blueprint have changed over time, we built real structures, like our electoral college, ghettos, and suburbs, just to name a few examples, that continue to dictate the way we live today based on that blue print. We can change our minds about it, but unless we dismantle and rebuild those structures, were stuck with the inequities they create.

You never told us what you meant by that.

I have no opinion one way or another.

The op ed I posted was another example of persons of color being written about by one of their own.

I do question however, the underlying motive of posting such op eds over and again in a forum where everyone is married outside their own culture.

Well, this particular forum isn't about marriage outside of a particular culture, it's about CEHST. I think Mr. Barkley's comments, regardless of their accuracy, are pretty current, and obviously kinda hot, based on the responses here.

So you think Mr. Barkley is just being racist in his remarks? You don't feel there's any truth to it, he's just trying to hurt the black people as a whole? I can't see him purposely trying to hurt people of his race, it appears he is just saying what he feels. I'm sure some don't like it, and of course there's room for argument, but racist? I don't see it.

Bill Cosby is good too. Thomas Sowell. Etc.

In my wife's culture, they call it "crab mentality". If one crab starts climbing out of the bucket, the other crabs pull him down. So nobody can escape the bucket. It's not limited to the black community. My God have we taken heat for advanced academic learning in our children. Haven't tested our four year old for a couple of months but last time he was five years ahead of his cohorts in reading and off the charts in science.

So we hear idiotic crab-mentality comments about ruining their childhood, pushing them too hard, learning before they are ready, etc. It's no different in spirit from the black kids who are bullied if they try hard academically. Gangsta culture is glorified.

Thank God we live off in the woods away from any of that #######.

Sometimes when everybody tells you that you're wrong, you are.

As don't hate black people or do they only associate with other Asians. It is an absurd bigoted statement born of ignorance.

Was the OP trying to start some sort

of meaningful dialog based on a quote from Barkley? The man who takes himself so u seriously that he said of himself

I heard Tonya Harding is calling herself the Charles Barkley of figure skating. I was going to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized I have no character."

do I think he us being racist in his remarks? His remarks are racist, I think he is in his heart an egomaniac driven to make idiotic statements to keep the focus on himself. This is the man who said he would hire himself out to the Klan if given enough money. He has no cred himself

You could try doing some research instead of jumping on an idea that has no scientific credibility. The human race consists of people with all types of physical characteristics, but we are all one race, that's a scientific truth, like it or not.

This isn't a scientific forum. When someones uses the word race/racism , they are not talking about the human race or human racism. Everybody gets it....well almost everybody.

Not really. And it's not true that Asians only like other Asians. Too many right here on VJ marrying outside their own cultures for anyone of any intelligence to begin believing that.

Depends on what Asians you're talking about. For the smaller Asian countries(Malaysia, Indonesia, PI, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, etc) I'd agree 100%. For the big dogs( Japan, China, and Korea) I'd say it was more in your face. The above mentioned countries, I never had issues going anywhere. The big three? I've been denied admittance into several bars and clubs, not served at restaurants, and other instances where I was told I wasn't allowed.

So while not all Asians are racist, it really boils down to who you come across and where you're located at the time.

Considering we live in a diverse nation, both culturally and ethnically, anyone can make a racist comment about anyone else and substantiate it with a half dozen examples. I tried to illustrate that with the op ed about racism in Asians.

As you yourself said, that op ed may not be true; could it just be, for a split second, that Mr. Barkley's was less than forthcoming with his intentions when he wrote his op ed?

So, to answer your question, I believe Mr. Barkley's op ed to bear as much relevance and contain as much truth as that of Mr. Nakagawa.

Well, I've only been in four of those countries you mentioned, and I have seen some of the same things you have. But I think the root cause is not racism as we experience it here in the USA; rather, I believe it is a language barrier. People DO tend to hang out with similar people, for obvious reasons. Language is a biggie. Many Koreans and Japanese are "nose bleed" when it comes to speaking English. They are ashamaed that they can't speak it, so they tend to be very stand-offish if you try to engage with them, unless you know their language. I have been in situations where a (Korean) man wouldn't even acknowledge me when I was trying to ask him directions. But I threw out about all five words in Hangul I knew, and suddenly he was a fountain of information... most of which I could not understand. Obviously, the PI and Thailand don't have quite the same level of English speaking citizens as Korea and Japan (and perhaps less pride, IDK), so it's easier for us to mingle with them.

As for the bar thing, it's not just a black thing, trust me. Or at least it wasn't where I was. I remember getting away from military installations and seeing signs in front of bars saying that Americans are not welcome inside, do not enter. Yeah, there are always factions/regions who don't appreciate outsiders, but if you happen to get in good with one Korean, and can communicate with them, a lot of the "fear factor" drops away and fun can be had by all.
