White House says it has Ebola virus under control

Top White House officials on Friday worked to reassure the American public that the national response to Ebola is under control.

Leaders of the country’s health, defense and military branches stressed that they are taking the right steps to contain the spread of the deadly virus, which was first diagnosed in the U.S. on Tuesday.

“We know how to do this, and we will do it again,” Lisa Monaco, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, said at a press briefing.

“It’s very important to remind the American people that U.S. has the most capable healthcare system and the most capable doctors in the world, bar none,” Monaco said.

The press conference appeared to be aimed at calming a public worried about a possible outbreak in the United States of the disease, which has killed more than 3,000 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The first case of Ebola in the United States was revealed this week. Fifty people who came in contact with Thomas Duncan, who traveled to the United States from Liberia, are under observation, including 10 who are considered at high risk of getting the disease.

Duncan’s entry to the United States has led to calls to cut off travel to the country from the African nations where Ebola has spread. The White House has rejected those calls, calling them counter-productive.

Two hospitals — in D.C. and Maryland — reported Friday that they were monitoring patients with Ebola-like symptoms, adding to the sense of urgency. Both cases are unconfirmed, and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) chief Sylvia Mathews Burwell said the D.C. case appeared to be “malarial” related.

With that backdrop, the officials at the White House made the case for why the U.S. is well equipped to handle Ebola.

Monaco said the U.S. healthcare system “could not be more opposite” than those in countries most affected by Ebola.

Anthony Fauci, director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stressed the U.S. healthcare care is “very, very, very well-established.”

While he acknowledged that the disease has spurred “a lot of fear” across the country, he reiterated that an outbreak is extremely unlikely.

The officials outlined a long list of precautions taken to control the disease since it was first diagnosed in March. The first humanitarian workers were deployed to the region that same month and continued to escalate their presence throughout the summer.

The HHS sent its first Ebola-related guidance to hospitals on July 28, and has since provided six more. The department has also strengthened surveillance and lab testing, as well as advising staff on how to properly screen airline passengers in the U.S.

Monaco stressed that the air screenings have been almost entirely effective in preventing the spread of Ebola onto U.S. soil.

“Dozens and dozens of people have been stopped from getting onto planes,” she said. “We have now seen tens of thousands of people [arrive in the U.S.] since March to the current day, and we now have this one isolated case.”

The administration also addressed growing concerns over the competency of the Dallas health system that is currently overseeing treatment of the country’s sole case of Ebola.

Health officials in Dallas revealed Friday there had been a 48-hour delay in identifying people who may have been in contact with the infected patient. The hospital already faced criticized for failing to initially diagnose Duncan’s Ebola-like after he told at least one clinician he had recently traveled in Liberia.

Fauci acknowledged that Dallas health workers had made mistakes but said he remained confident that the federal government was managing the response.

“There are things that did not go the way they should have in Dallas,” he said. “Although there were missteps there, there were good things that happened also.”

Here's what you can quote me on lost. This situation is not going to lead to an epidemic. Maybe this guy and a few others, and I really doubt the few others. Ebola will not spread well in our society. It's only contagious when someone is actively sick and even then, you have to exchange body fluids. Doctors are not worried. People that study this for a living are not worried. Neither am I. I'm worried when people who are educated and dedicate their life researching something are worried.

So what is the acceptable number of deaths in this country because you will not close the borders... What is the acceptable level of cost.. 100 folks under quarantine . airlines chasing down passengers. . Who bears that cost. . This man knew he was sick .. He has bodily contact with 2 people that died. His only hope was to get on a plane and get to our medical system. Now how many more thousands of people have the same ideas...What screening is involved at the host country... You sign a paper .. I am not infected.....Pop a few advill or what ever to lower your fever and you are good to go.

How many people will rent this apartment after ebola was found there ?

This is what is involved once you are suspect

When dealing with biological hazards at this level the use of a Hazmat suit and a self-contained oxygen supply is mandatory. The entrance and exit of a Level Four biolab will contain multiple showers, a vacuum room, an ultraviolet light room, autonomous detection system, and other safety precautions designed to destroy all traces of the biohazard. Multiple airlocks are employed and are electronically secured to prevent both doors opening at the same time. All air and water service going to and coming from a Biosafety Level 4 (P4) lab will undergo similar decontamination procedures to eliminate the possibility of an accidental release.

I doubt this is one of thoses 300/day rooms correct.

Now enter the false positives in dealing with this.... We are not sure if so and so might have ebola... Into that special room they go. ...What will the cost/day be ? 5-10,000/day.. I don't know.

Be careful what you wish for, Einstein.

Arkansas congressmen ask Obama to ban travel to US from Ebola-plagued countries Posted By Leslie Newell Peacock on Fri, Oct 3, 2014 at 4:18 PM
Arkansas Reps. Tom Cotton, Tim Griffin, Steve Womack and Rick Crawford wrote President Obama today to urge him to "implement travel restrictions, up to and including a ban on flights from the affected countries."

The president may be pondering that very thing, though it's hard to see how you'd get suffering Americans back home if flights were banned. But maybe that's the point. The congressmen also say yes, it's important to treat the virus in this country but warn that workers at the CDC are "subject to human error." Are they riding the Rapert bus, saying we shouldn't take care of the sick?

The congressmen also urged the president to "enforce immigration policies under current law to protect our borders and the American people from the threat posed by this virulent disease."

First it was Texas Gov. Rick Perry seeing Isis terrorists gathering at the border, and now it's folks with Ebola. Seems like that would kill two problems with one stone, wouldn't it?

They also urge the president to suspend the "thousands of nonimmigrant visas already issued to persons from African countries dealing with Ebola." It's unclear to me if they mean people from Liberia here in a visa should be sent back to the stricken country.

Here's the letter. You decide.

Here are a few more folks supporting my point of view spook. read the letter sent to Eboma

Tosh. The US is sending people to help this situation. Banning people from returning after they do so is ridiculous, no to mention the Doctors who have already been saved by US medical intervention because they were airlifted back to the US after contracting the disease while helping victims. Some people need to educate themselves as to what risk evaluation really means and how easy it is to make rational decisions on what is or isn't a sensible precaution when all factors are taken into consideration. There will not be a wide spread epidemic of Ebola in the US.

I just told you I don't think anyone other than this guy, and probably not even him, are going to die. We should shut the borders countries with outbreaks of the flu as it certainly kills more Americans than Ebola and is far more contagious.
