OK then. White PEOPLE aren't blaming their problems on racism. They can't. Feel better now?

That's probably because we haven't been subjected to overt, institutional racism within living memory ;-)

Because no one in the white community is constantly blaming racism for all their ills. They can't.

The term 'white community' is a fiction. It doesn't exist.

I think it's clear that the term "community" is a general phrase and simply means "as a whole". That's what I mean when I use it.

The living memory of institutional racism is quickly coming to an end. Then where do you place the blame? I'm sure people will find something. Anything is better than having to take responsibility for your own actions.

I know what you meant, and I'm sure he did too.

I think it's unreasonable not to look within the black community for at least part of the cause for their problems.

It is. There are some problems that we can fix.

If both sides would work on it, it could be done. But a majority of white America is saying, fix yourself first then everything else will fall into place, rather than say let's work on what we can do first, which would help on their side.

I think white America is growing tired of everything bad that happens to a black person being blamed on racism. I know I am.

Well actually it implies togetherness and solidarity. I think it's quite telling that people accept this idea of 'community' unquestioningly when talking about other demographic/ethnic groups - because those people are 'over there' and are different to us.

Race is only important for white people when talking about people of other ethnic backgrounds.

You wanna stand by that statement, or modify it? If you stand by it, I'll post about 1000 examples of how false that is.

The blame for what?

I'm talking about recognising that an entire section of the population has been left-behind and experiences significant cross-generational social problems as a direct legacy of the past.

What does being white mean to you?

I'm not sure it means anything to me.

and this is called white privilege.

it's not fair that white people don't have racism to blame for their problems, but white people don't have to deal racism to begin with.

I guess I misunderstood you. I thought you were making the case that the reason that black folks have the issue they have today is due to racism. Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm talking about recognising that an entire section of the population has been left-behind and experiences significant cross-generational social problems as a direct legacy of the past.

OK so how long can the past be the reason for these issues? 200 years? 500 years? 1000 years?

I agree it needs to be done in tandem, finger pointing will get us nowhere.

I will say this though and I believe I speak for a good amount of reasonable people in this country that do agree racism is still a problem. When Black people react in an irrational manner, the way they have been to recent incidents, it pushes folks like me who want to help make a difference further and further away.

And this is why I don't agree with the US being the poster child of racism in the world. It is much worse in many places, yet white America bears the brunt of it. My feelings towards racism in general have taken a bit of a turn in the last few years. It's time for people of all colors to start taking responsibility for their actions and stop blaming everyone else.

Probably because most black people live here in America. I've read stories about what it's like to be black in India. Over there, it's more in your face and you can't do anything about it. Even in Japan and Korea, I couldn't stand it when those Japanese women would give out flyers to white service members, but would clam up and flat out ignore my sailors and I. White people take the brunt of it here because of the history of slavery that took place here.

I'm not sure it means anything to me.

Let's say I came out and said I was proud to be white. I'd be called a Nazi skinhead racist.
