He Dropped One Letter In His Name While Applying For Jobs, And The Responses Rolled In

My brother-in-law is foreigner, and despite having Ph.D. in engineering,

he was struggling to just get interviews...(this is long time ago).

Then, he started using "Nike" nickname as his first name on resumes and cover letters,

and he got many interviews and ultimately the job offer.

And this is something that is common, at least among Asian immigrants, like myself,

to use English name as the first name (be it nickname or official).

Using English first name has many benefits living in US...

1) People can actually pronounce your name

2) People can remember your name easily

3) English name makes one feel less foreign and less strange

I gave my 2 kids English first name, and we gave Asian middle name.

Because no one wants to hire an Asian with a pHd in engineering,

unprouncaeble names make people uncomfortable. so you change. make them comfortable.

its not unlike selling cars.

Maybe there is a stereotype that Asians are bad at math

Is this story true. Who knows. Most of this resume submission sites are automated anyway. More than likely what happened is the same experience I had. when your resume is new it gets lots of attention, then as you apply more and more it gets more saturation and less response. More than likely it was treated as a new resume and all the job sites propagated it and it got lots of new attention.

Do some independent verification and blind testing and get back to me. The story is BS

So you're saying if he had changed only the name on the applicantion, say to Juan Pablo Quintanilla, but kept the credentials the same he would still get the high volume of calls?

The point was that there are millions of Hispanic people employed in this country and not every illegal is a field hand . Shocker right . I don't buy that nobody would look at this guy then like magic his inbox just fills up just because he changed his name. I will tell you that in many HR departments Hispanic people are sought out for language skills and because they have a reputation as hard workers.

What grates me is, people with a chip already on there shoulder comb the net for, junk science BS stories like this and then jump all over it, yet there own life experiences paint a different picture.

So what you're saying is, even though there are quite a few stories and testing on this very subject(Remember Bianca White? You didn't believe her either) you still don't believe it?

I am saying that I don't believe that many 1000's of websites rejected his resume because his name is Jose and accepted it because he changed it to Joe.

From observing my step son ... Asians are disciplined ... Willing to study 5 hours a night after school. Willing to take the most advanced courses they can... All this so they can get into a good university and get a good job in the future. Of course some folks take a different path. 5 hours a night on the basket ball court. hoping to get into a good university and a good job in the future.
