So I got my greencard last Saturday- NAME is INCORRECT, not my fault. So I called today, have to file I-90 and submit evidence that it is not my fault. I just wanna be done, and I was planning to travel soon so Im not very pleased. USCIS told me it takes 3 months or so but they will expedite it. I asked how long- the answer is it will be a bit faster.... Really now, I want to hear just a week.

Oh boooo!! I hope this can be remedied quicker than what they told you!

A little random, but I've had a look on other threads and I can't find a conclusive answer.

I am a US Green Card holder (adjusted from K1 recently). I just applied for and received a new passport from my home country, in my married name.

Am I required to inform USCIS of the change of my passport?

I assume your GC is in your married name, so it is given that you should change your name in your passport (and other legal documents) so you dont encounter any problem when you travel.. No need to report to USCIS, they assume that you will update your passport. Only change of address, you have to let them know within 10 days.

Thanks for the responses!

I was sure that it was normal for everyone to get a new passport in their new married name, and that I wasn't required to inform USCIS as my US status is now Green Card based rather than visa in a passport, but I wanted to be sure!

Of course!

I wanted everything in my new name (I'm not sure about the legalities of it, but I'm pretty sure it's at least considered 'dodgy' to use two different names on official documents). When you are married in the US, you are married everywhere!

Also, as stated by another VJ member - Although you can travel internationally with your GC in one name and your passport still in your maiden name, it's obviously not as straight forward as if both are in the same name. It would require at least some explanation and proof of identity matching the GC, such as a marriage certificate.

In my experience, particularly with immigration, it's much easier to have everything in it's proper place! :)
