Thanks everyone. By the way, does anyone know about the validity of passports? My philippine passport will expire on July 26, 2015. We plan to go to the US first week of January 2015. Should i renew my passport now to be sure?

Since you will probably be changing your name and want to get it redone anyway, I would not.

Well in that case I think it would probably be a lot less hassle to do it there, unless you are going to live very near DC or will wait on a consular outreach, which still may be far away.

Shouldn't do it now, the visa will be in his current passport, if he renews his passport the old one will be invalidated... ouch! Special delivery to the embassy, requesting they reissue the visa..... no way I would suggest that one.

just FYI, if your visa that has not expired is in a passport that has been "invalidated", you can still use the visa - you would just need to present both the old and the new passports to CBP at POE. that is what i did in May this year, with no issues. see CBP's note below:

If your visa is in a passport that has expired or will expire within 6 months of the end of your U.S. visit, you will need to get a new passport. However, you do not need to apply for a new visa. Just bring both your new passport and your old passport with the valid visa to present to the CBP Officer when you arrive in the U.S.

You have to enter the US with 6 months remaining on your passport. This is simple. Count back from July 26, 2015 and you will have your last day to enter the US on a valid passport. Here, I did the math for you. January 24, 2015 is the last day.

I will just renew it when it expires. Since i can still leave with my existing passport whose expiration is July 26, 2015. Since ik leaving first week of January
