My fiancee is in the Philippines. Her Uncle lives in Daly City, California. Her Uncle wants me to invite my fiancee's dad to the wedding by helping with a visitor's visa. I want to concentrate on the one thing of getting my love over here, and don't want this complication, but am gathering information. Would I fill out the form inviting him so he could obtain a visitor's visa? We don't even know when the visa will be approved and when the wedding will be. Will it add a complication to our K1 visa? What if he overstays his visa, does that hurt our AOS?

These are just some of my questions. My fiancee was embarrassed to tell me earlier how much her Uncle is insisting that we help her dad attend the wedding. I hope I can get some good advice here on handling the situation.

Start by having them read about the visitor visa requirements in the Philippines http://manila.usembassy.gov/wwwhniv5.html

They provide all the information, pay a fee, and attend an interview. There is nothing you can to to help unless the embassy specifically suggests that you provide an invitation letter - this is usually not required and is not often helpful.

There is no relationship between her father's application for a visitor's visa and your K1 process or your AOS process.

I would ditto the above, if an invitation is required why does not the Uncle do it, or why has he not done it?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Thanks for the replies. The father was once denied for a tourist visa, so I think the Uncle believes there will be a better opportunity for his brother to be approved to attend his daughter's wedding.

Just tell him to bring the wedding invitation to the interview at the embassy and to have proves of ties back in the Philippines: work, house, car, etc...

But, with the K1, it's hard to know a date ahead of time. Our plan is to have her come out as soon as the visa is approved, and so our wedding plans are quite flexible.

Unfortunately, the possibilities of a Philippine national of getting a visitor/tourist visa are slim or none unless they have a large bank account or hold prominent positions. It never hurts to try though.

Several factors come into play. Age and marital status are big ones. Before we got engaged, my wife was denied a tourist visa to come to the US for her aunt's wedding. This despite the fact that my wife owned a business and had considerable family ties to the Philippines, being the eldest in her family. The officer told her that she was a very attractive young woman and so he thought it quite possible that some nice American guy would fall for her while she was here. I thought it was a rather chauvenistic reason for a denial, but apparently the Philippines has a bad reputation for people abusing tourist visas. My wife was more accepting of the denial than I was. She ended up coming over 8 months later on a K1.

My mother-in-law on the other hand had a visa previously and didn't overstay, so she's more likely to be able to get another one.

Just wonderd how you would otherwise decribe yourself.

Get 10 wedding invies made with " A DATE" on it. Then he can take the invite to the USE and plead his case.

1/27/2007 Nerissa told me she received a ltr on Friday 26th from USE in Manila telling her they had our petition. I'm sure that's a GREAT thing.
