Me and my wife was thinking. Would it be faster if we got a lawyer? Or could we do it alone with out a lawyer? Sent we are marry in Cebu. Would that make things easier for us?

If anything, a lawyer would slow down the process by adding one more step to it. Read the instructions carefully and use this forum extensively, you can definitely do it by yourself!

Good luck!

With VJ everything is right here and you get all the support you can ever ask for. You don't have to wait for your lawyer to call you back or wonder is he doing everything possible to get your wife here in usa etc. Nothing your lawyer can do that you cant do yourself so keep your money and do it yourself. Take the time and read and educate yourself on this site. Most of the time all your answer will have already been answer with others posting the questions your thinking about. a+j is right a lawyer would slow things down and you don't need the stress. This has been a great journey for my fiancée and I and all thanks to VJ and members. I will pay it forward by helping others who is on the same journey as I was and help anyone out if I can.

Good Luck and don't be afraid to ask questions. We are all here for the same common goal and that's to be reunited with love ones :)

Unless you

  • just don't have the time
  • have difficulty following instructions
  • have a criminal background of epic proportions, thus, making a lawyer helpful
  • have extra cash you no longer need

you and your wife can do this.

All of the required supporting documents and personal information, would be gathered by you and your wife, only to be turned over to a lawyer, who would then fill in the blanks of various forms. However, a lawyer can slow the process -- but make it faster, nope.

Since the beneficiary (your wife) is in the Philippines, the I-130 Petition would get speedy processing by USCIS.

Here you are.

Thank you all so much. This was really worrying me. I am saving up money now in my savings. I just wasn't sure about getting a lawyer. And like I said this is all new to me and my wife. And I didn't want to spend a lot of money to make a lot of mistakes. To redo everything all over again. I don't have money to just throw away. Thanks everyone one. Me ans my wife will be asking a lot of Questions here. And I am think by next summer every thing should be done.

Lawyers only really help when expertise is needed in special cases, like your spouse has a criminal history or was a former member of the communist party. The EP process has especially made it easy for individuals to file for themselves without the help of a lawyer.

People who are not good with paperwork also benefit from lawyers or a "visa service".
