MSNBC: Iraq's collapse is a problem ...because people might think it's Obama's fault

Maybe because it is? Nah, that can't be it. Nothing's his fault.

In the last few days, city after city has fallen to a massive army of Al Qaeda offshoot terrorists called ISIS. As the Daily Beast puts it, ISIS is the terrorist organization so extreme that it was "booted" from Al Qaeda proper. They organized, trained, took Mosul and, as a result, have now confiscated gobs of formerly-U.S. military hardware.

With the fall of Mosul on Tuesday, Iraq’s al Qaeda offshoot has not only seized the country’s second-largest city, it appears it also has come into possession of the heavy weapons and vehicles the U.S. military had provided Iraq’s military to fight them.

Now, the Independent reports that Baghdad is preparing for the worst as the army of Islamic militants threatens to overrun the capital city.

Islamist militants are closing in on Baghdad after capturing two towns north of Iraq's capital.

Officials said Iraqi soldiers abandoned their posts with no resistance when fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) pushed into Diyala province.

The UN said hundreds have been killed - with militants carrying out summary executions of civilians in Mosul, including 17 civilians in one street.

A dozen Iraqi security personnel were also killed and four women committed suicide after being raped.

UNAMI, the UN's mission to Iraq, estimates that almost 1,000 people may have been injured in recent days and half a million residents have fled Mosul.

So, with all of that in mind, we turn to MSNBC's Tamron Hall. She was discussing the situation with Time Magazine's Bobby Ghosh, and she wants to make sure everyone is aware of her deep, heartfelt concern. Oh, she doesn't care so much about the conditions in Iraq, the squandered U.S. lives, or the vast amounts of money this country spent.

She's worried that people might blame Barack Obama for what's happening.

But, realistically Bobby, Iraq cannot forever be the U.S.' problem. We know what happened. The loss of lives and treasure. We know the great divide that the war created within politics here, but when you see an elder statesman like Senator John McCain yet again saying a country, another country now needs the intervention of the United States and blaming this on the current administration, knowing that this President all along disagreed with the war and was largely the reason he was elected here. This then drives it back into the domestic politics of 'it’s Obama's fault.'

This was the theme for the Diane Rehm show today as well.. and I did find it interesting that they pushed a lot of the blame on the Iraqi president ruining Shia and Sunni relations. I agreed with the points made but I thought to myself - if there was a republican in office this would have been a different conversation.

is it Bush's fault for going there to begin with.?

and I agree that Iraq can not be our problem forever... if anything, this should be a good lesson regarding Afghanistan.. we should just leave now and take all our toys with us...

Well, that's the point. We stayed longer in Afghanistan but that place will fall apart just as badly when we leave. Whenever that happens to be. We could have left Afghanistan 5 years ago and the ultimate outcome would be the same as if we would leave 10 years from now. Same with Iraq. It's largely inconsequential when we left. There was really but one way to keep it contained - and we took that out. If not governed with an iron fist, chaos ensues. And that's what we've had there ever since Saddam was taken down. He was a bad man, for sure, but he kept the place in order.

Right on the money. We should not have gone in, in the first place, but then everyone wanted to avenge 9/11. In 2011 we could not get out of there soon enough. We have nobody else to blame but ourselves.

Having said that, I don't think we should sacrifice another American life protecting a country that is not interested in what we have to offer. We have more than done our duty there.

If you listen to the Republican party, everything is his fault, even stuff that happened long before he even became President. Your not making any sense, first you accuse the dems of continuing to blame Dubya for everything, and then same breath, you admit that this disaster didn't end with his presidency. The Republicans blamed Obama from day one, so it's hardly a surprise for me that Dems might not be too willing to take anything anyone in the says in republican party seriously. I'm still waiting for the unemployment rate to jump through the roof thanks to Obama care, nor have I read or heard anything about Obama, the Muslim/communist/socialist/terrorist/dictator/President for life, etc, etc.. to announce his third term in office and his mandatory confiscation of all non-government controlled firearms.
