I can respect ppl's right to be against fur so long as they don't own any leather :)

Leather is a by product of the meat industry so the animal is being killed for their meat not for their fur! When fur is being used the animal is purely killed just for their fur and nothing else so its not the same comparing leather to fur! Also, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for wearing fur these days, there are many many alternatives; fake fur being one of them. As for leather shoes, well, not only is it a by product of the meat industry but also there is not that many other alternatives. The majority of shoes are made out of leather. I try my best to find non leather shoes but sometimes its not possible to do. Handbags and purses on the other hand, well there are plenty of alternatives so you can avoid buying leather. Also, the fur trim on alot of coats these days are from both cats and dogs, the dogs tend to be Alsations. And at the end of the day, the bottom line is this ... Those poor animals need their fur alot more than we do! Anyone who does wear fur needs to get a consience!

Also, it takes a lot less cows to make a leather jacket (or pair of shoes etc) than it takes minks to make a mink fur coat.. Not into the fur thing but I definately wouldnt go around spray painting fur coats so ppl cant wear them anymore! (just means more animals would have to die for yet another fur coat..)

No.. that is in addition to also using most of the rest of the animal for something else.. (note the "also" at the beginning of my statement.. it refers to ladybutterfly's comment on how cattle are also used for meat) I just dont like the idea of using only the fur and letting the rest of the animal(s) rot uselessly.. At least leather tends to be a byproduct. Definately not sheer number since i'm pretty sure they go through fewer minks than they do cows..

Lady Butterfly I'd love to see some evidence that leather is a byproduct of the meat industry. I'm not challenging you I'd just like to read it firsthand.

I don't buy leather and I'd die before buying fur. But I've gone back to meat eating for awhile. I don't think it will last though. It's been a year and a half of meat-eating now. It's starting to make me ill.

Right, but if you're like my friend....vegetarian and fur protester.....I hardly think the fact that cows are eaten is justification for wearing leather when she herself doesn't eat them cos she thinks it's wrong. See where I'm goin with this?

Who is to say what's a 'useful' purpose and what isn't? You can wear an animal's skin so long as you eat them?

those who protest against fur should only be wearing non-wool cloth products (including belt and shoes).

except you don't have to kill a sheep to get wool.

True, but some of these animal-rights chop_'s would say that it deprives the sheep of much-needed warmth and protection.

Hmmm I would say that if she doesn't eat them and protest for their rights then she should not be wearing leather or any animal skin products. That would be the same as eating them, I think? So vinyl shoes, man made leather like stuff and polyester fur for her would be appropriate.

It's been a year and a half of meat-eating now. It's starting to make me ill.

Go read the book, "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. It is certain to hasten your decision to quit eating meat. It will give you added incentive.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

I think there's reasonable arguments against fur because of the way the animal is killed and that the animal is killed only for its fur. Leather from cows is a byproduct from beef. There are those against killing any animal regardless of the circumstances, but they don't represent all view points.

I knew someone who travelled to Korea to visit her mother's homeland - and while she was there she ate dog. Some people here would be repulsed by that while they have no qualms about eating beef.

I read that already, sadly!

I do try to only eat organic local meats though

But it's not always in my power (like at a restaurant). The only thing in my power is to choose vegetarian options which I haven't been doing always, I admit.
