1. Since we likely will not be able to make it to my Oath, doing an "infopass" is totally out of the question!

2. I will ask. I just hope it is not too late by that time!

3.--

4. This id different than the N-445?

5. You can't get a SSN card unless you have a US Birth Certificate and a State Drivers License. Green Card does nothing for work. Employers will not hire you with a Green Card.

6. It is not my decision to delay. We certainly can't WALK all the way to USCIS! lol 3 days by motorvehicle. Walking would take years!

I came to the United States on F1 visa and I had a social security and I worked. After I got my 2 year green card, I went I updated my social security card to be unrestricted. I had a social security card for more then 5 years now. I have been legally working since I got my first green card and yes with a social security card. Madam, have you ever seen the booklet that they send you with your green card? It tells you your rights and responsibilities as a permanent resident. One of your rights is to work legally in the US and to live in the US and to travel outside the US for a certain amount of time. I traveld outside the US for 3 weeks when I had my green card.

The form N445 is the oath letter. You don't need only birth certificates to get an SSN. If so, how did the millions of immigrants who came to the US live? The only option would be if they were millioners, as far as I know more than 60% of immigrants are not rich.

And madam, since you know its a hassle for you to come from where you live, why didn't you ask for a same day oath? Madam I don't think it takes 3 days to go to your oath or to your USCIS local office. From east coast to the west coast it takes less then 1 day if you drive nonstop. I'm not saying you are lying but if I were you I would explain my circumstances to the officers. They are humans, they are not going to make you do the impossible.

One last thing, when you got your green card the first time, you had the same rights as a US citizen except: to vote, travel with a US passport, serve on a jury, get federal jobs, and go for election. Madam You had the right to work in the US since day one of getting the green card. You had the option to get the SScard since the day one you got the green card.

I'm not telling you to make an infopass, I'm asking you to do one to lessen the hassle on you later.

Oh for work, I work at UPS, UPS will not hire you if you are illegal and I have been there for 3 years now.

If you have any questions I will answer as far as I know. Good luck.

Ok, you have some bad information. You can get all of those with a green card (well, minus the US birth certificate, that one you cant really get - I mean, the US cannot issue certificate of birth for non Americans born in other countries retroactively).

But, you only need the green card and your passport with a valid visa to get an SSN. I got mine with just the passport and my birth certificate from home (no US issued paper). Same goes for Driver's Licence - I got mine with the SSN and the worl/trave combo card (which is like a less powerful, emporary green card).

You were severely misinformed. Who told you all these things?

The Department of Transportation told me about the Drivers License. The Social Security Administraion told me about the SSN Card. The US Post Office and the City Hall told me about the passport.

I guess the authorities are not as informed as you. Perhaps you should contact the government for me and tell them how to do their job and that they are not informed?

I am not as knowledgeable as the other members on VS; however, I do remember that my husband got his Social Security card way before his citizenship- he obviously did not have a US birth certificate, given that he is an Australian. In fact, he got the SS card when he got his 2 year conditional green card. After getting his citizenship last year, he went to the SS office and updated his status to citizen. My husband was working with his 2 year green card, and didn't have to wait for his citizenship to go through.

He did apply for a US passport by submitting his certificate of naturalization.

He did tell me that his interview took only 15-20 minutes and the questions were easy (he answered the first 6 correctly), but I think he found it easy, because he studied hard and was well prepared.

I wish you the best. Hope everything works out.

Ummm...yes, you don't know what you're talking about. You can apply for SSN with your Green Card and yes, you can work legally if you have your green card. Who told you that you will get US birth certificate once you become a citizen? You will not get one and you will never get one. Read more.

Well, every job I apply it does not accept green card for employment. In fact, most jobs will not even let you apply wihtout a SSN. Most jobs hire online. If you do not input SSN, it will deny you to apply. Yes you can apply for a SSN with a green card. But SSA will say no. Why would you not get a US Birth Certificate when you are a US Citizen? If you dont then how do you live in America?

You can get a US Passport with a Naturalization Certificate.

I'm sorry, but you cant get a US Passport with a Naturalization Certificate. Already checked. And thank you for moderating these forums. I don't know why racists come on here to bother people trying to be good Americans.

LYN1990 you have been given enough advice about your questions and it's up to you to decide what to do next? Continuing along antagonistic lines like this will probably earn you a troll label and no one will pay serious attention to your questions anymore.

Does your husband live in Idaho also? I think somehting people are forgetting is that all these rules depend on what location you are going to. If you are in another a state, or even the next county, it may be comepletely different. I don't know where some people go where they get these things. But nowhere that I know of in this state can you get these things if you were not born here. I hope I can get my US Birth Certificate after I am a Citizen! Thank you for the encouragements!

Social Security is a federal program. It does not vary state to state.

Go to http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm

Click on "Noncitizen" on the left hand side and it will tell you all the documentation you need when you apply for a card.

I got my social security card long before I even had a green card.

I called it in my previous post and now you just confirmed my suspicion. You are a troll with too much time on your hands. Please stop trolling and wasting people's time so they can help others who really need help.

U take your GC and go to SS office. they give you ssn and you are ready to work. Do you think we all just walking?? no we all have cars and we ALL not citizens yet. I'm sorry, but you cant get a US Passport with a Naturalization Certificate.

The following is taken directly from the State Department (the agency responsible for issuing passports): http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/new.html#step3

Primary Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (One of the following):

  • Previously issued, undamaged, and fully valid U.S. Passport (5 year for minors or 10 years for adults)
  • *Certified U.S. birth certificate (must meet all of the following requirements):
    • issued by the City, County, or State of birth
    • Lists bearer's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
    • Lists parent(s) full namesHas date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
    • Has registrar's signature
    • Has embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal of registrar
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Certificate of Citizenship

A Naturalization Certificate is an acceptable document when applying for a Passport.
