He did a great job rolling that hatred right off of him. And he kept it moving as if nothing ever happened. Wonderful, but it is sad when you have to get used to this type of treatment. Kudos to this guy. A Villarreal fan threw a banana at Dani Alves, so he ate it before taking his corner kick

Dani Alves eats your hatred.

It's been a very emotional few days for Barcelona as they had to travel to Villarreal and try to keep their title hopes alive just two days after the death of former manager Tito Vilanova. Given the circumstances, it was understandable that Barca fell behind 2-0 before the hour mark, but then they mounted a comeback and in the midst of that, Dani Alves showed that he was not in the mood to let any abusive fans get to him.

A Villarreal own goal in the 65th minute made it 2-1 and gave Barcelona something to build on. About 10 minutes later, Barca won a corner kick and Dani Alves went to take it. Villarreal fans threw things at him once he got near them — one of those items being a banana. When Alves spotted it laying on the pitch, he casually picked it up, peeled it, took a big bite, tossed the peel aside and took his corner kick. As cool as can be.

Two minutes later, Villarreal scored another own goal to make it 2-2 and Lionel Messi came through with a goal in the 83rd minute to give Barca a 3-2 that will undoubtedly be dedicated to Tito Vilanova.

Sadly, racist abuse — including bananas and monkey sounds — has become old hat to Dani Alves. In January of last year, he said, "I go through this constantly in all the grounds I go to. It is a shame, as fans can like you or not, and there can be heated moments within games, but the crowd should just support their own team. [...] I have been here [in Spain] for ten years and since the first year this kind of thing has happened. There are worse grounds [than the Bernabeu]. It happens all over Spain. I lived through it at Sevilla. Until action is taken, nothing will be fixed."

Following the Villarreal match, Alves expanded on his previous comments with an explanation of his personal approach to racism in the absence of institutional change. From the AP:

"We have suffered this in Spain for some time," Alves said. "You have to take it with a dose of humor. We aren't going to change things easily.

"If you don't give it importance, they don't achieve their objective."

Hopefully one day soon the powers that be will provide the action Alves and so many others have called for. But until then, Dani Alves will eat your nutritious bananas and use that fuel to help him beat your team.

As if Alves' reaction in the moment wasn't brilliant enough, Neymar, his teammate at both Barcelona and the Brazilian national team, later posted a photo on Instagram of himself holding a banana while his young son, David Lucca, hugged a banana stuffed toy. Neymar's caption to the picture: "We are all monkeys."

That shows real class. Well played, Mr. Alves.

I'll bet the eejit that threw the banana felt pretty embarrassed that his attempt at provocation backfired so publicly. Serves him right.

Everybody should have gotten together and threw rotten bananas at the guy.

No need to lower yourelf to that level. The man showed he has a lot of class.

I know. But it would have been nice if the fan went home smelling a little stinky. But since he feels stinky, I have to settle for this.

Dude is pretty hot. Who throws banana at hot dudes?

Hello! That is what I was thinking. Why? The guy is just gorgeous.

To even have a banana to throw shows the planing that might have gone in his despicable act.

What? Will you now come up with an excuse? Maybe he ran over someone's dog one day or he deserves it because of his ancestors/

Janelle I say this with sincerity to you.

You are so full of anger, you can't even read something without mixing up -what is written with your angry thoughts.

My comment simply pointed to the man's "forethought" ...it made no excuse whatsoever.

Check yourself girl.

I have never nor would I ever abuse you (or anyone else).

Exchange of ideas is not abuse or it shouldn't be, if you ever think I am over the line, let me know and I will publicly say sorry.

I respect and value you here (seriously)

Telling me you dislike everything about my existence, indirectly, is not abuse? What if I went on rants about how I hate white people all the time and then tell you I respect and value you. Would you take me serious?

When you say something positive about black people on here, I will take you serious. You have yet to acknowledge anything fruitful that black people have done. Look at what this poor guy has to suffer through in his home country. And why? Did he do something to the whole of Spain to deserve such treatment? And so what if some black person in Spain did something wrong, is it his fault? You have yet to grasp that everybody's life is different and just because you do not live it doesn't mean what happens to them is any less than what they say. I applaud people of ANY color to make it through life's hard trials and tribulations. They are not easy. But to tell someone that their trials and tribulations are any less than others simply passed off of color is just plan wrong.

Use the search engine, post one example of my claim to hate you or Black people.

Just one example.

Criticizing AMERICAN modern Black culture is not the same as hating Black people..... not sure why you don't get that.

Sorry to interject in the race war above but back to topic...

It's sad that this still happens in Spain, the one time in the last 10 years that I witnessed someone shout a racist comment at a football game in England someone offered to knock the offender out and the racist was escorted from the stadium and banned from attending again. That kind of action needs to happen wherever these incidents occur.

Edit- Have just seen Villareal have banned the guy for life, good, name and shame him too as it's the only way these people learn.
