There is no such thing an an effective deterrent, as the British came to realize, after they were driven from one colony after another.

Funny, because nuclear weapons have done a pretty good job of keeping the world clear of anything but localised conflicts since 1945. That's a pretty effective deterrent in my book.

Another great deterrent is to spend way more money then everyone else together on your military. Sure it pisses people off but so what when you can just squash them.

I don't know about deterrence, but if you got one, the US will be your friend and keep sending you money. I don't understand what you mean by "localized". If you mean Germany has not tried to increase their territory since WWII, that is true. That same can't be said for the Japanese, who seem to think they have the right to eat anything that lives in the Pacific Ocean. Nukes have not kept the Japanese from poaching the territorial waters of the US, or any other nation bordering, or lying within the Pacific Ocean.

Deterrence - speak softly, but carry a big stick.

And in other news Church and Dwight, makers of Trojan brand condoms, has recently announced plans for a new distribution center in the Philippines.

I see an increase in Fil-Am marriages -- USEM will be a very busy place after the first few rotations.

"Retreat hell! We just got here!"

I celebrated my eighteenth birthday on that exact boat in the picture. That is the USS James K. Polk SSBN 645. I was an A-Ganger ( MM ) onboard and made a total of 7 patrols. She was later out fitted for other duties like the Postmaster said, and then converted over to a SSN before finally being decommissioned. Lot's of good friends and memories from those days. Like luckytxn, my Cold War service period was late 70's and early 80's. My first refit was completed in Rota, Spain if any of the other bubbleheads here can remember that base and tender.
