On the VJ guide to applying for the IR-1/CR-1 it says "A copy of your marriage certificate", "Copy of the full Birth certificate", and so on. My question is:

Do these copies need to be notarized copies, certified copies, or just plain xerox copies?

Many thanks

The way your posts reads, the applicant would be hand carrying their documents to the interview which is not the case when the NVC is in the mix.

So you are saying that NO original documents are needed at the interview

That member may be saying that and typically, it would be correct. However, in real life, you're going to want to optin for electronic processing through the NVC stage, (not available everywhere but now available for London) so will be scanning and emailing the original or original certified copies of documents, then having the beneficiary carry all originals to the interview.

A certified copy is one issued and certified by the government agency holding the original. What WILL be original is the Police Report.

With rare exceptions, like China, there is no notarization of any document, during the immigrant visa process.

Thank you for putting it that way :) which is far better than just saying someone is wrong with no explanation, also I think that they need to update the "Guides" as the info is a bit misleading at times. once again thanks :)

Be sure that when the beneficiary orders the certified copy of their birth certificate, that they order the long form, with parent information. The short form typical in the British Commonwealth countries is not acceptable for US immigration purposes.

So you are saying that NO original documents are needed at the interview

That's not what I was saying, your first post that I was replying to implied that a spousal visa applicant hand carries original documents to the interview and that is not correct when the NVC is involved in document intake. Original documents are sent to the NVC in that instance.
