Extreme right wingers have a hard-on for authoritarian figures like Putin. Not only in the US. Same in Europe, too. They see Putin make a Hitler-like move when grabbing Crimea and they start imagining what could be. It really gets them going.

So Putin is playing the roll of Hitler and Obama is playing the roll of?

Don't underestimate what the extra year or so that Neville Chamberlain earned meant when WWII finally engulfed Europe. Great Britain was better able to exist the German onslaught in 1940, because we had an additional year to build up the RAF. As it was, the Battle of Britain, the precursor to any invasion, was a close-run thing.

Point taken but.... if these folks had not banked on WW1 as being the last real war.... they would have been more prepared.

I love the optimism of my friends on the Left when it comes to their understanding of mankind.... but at the same time their folly is dangerous.

Nobody's rolling anywhere, Danno.

Maybe you are not aware we have invested 5 billion dollars in Ukraine for the singular purpose of pulling them away from their ties with Russia and into the arms of the EU and of course the military alliance NATO.

THAT is what this is about.

It's not about us spending 5 bil on getting their economy up or to open up trade without the NATO connection. It's not about us trying to help some struggling country.

They come to NATO, we deliver help... No NATO, no help.

This is not about wanting Russia to swallow Ukraine... it's about understanding why they feel they have no choice.

Be fair minded, would we tolerate the USSR encircling us?

I kind of thought there wasn't any USSR anymore, but no- and that is becuase USSR encircling us was a threat to our very existence. We were on the brink of Nuclear war with USSR back in those days. Nobody thinks NATO is about to invade Russia- not even Putin. (and I made a very poor comparison?, huh) Whom a country has economic ties with and military treaties is really that countries decision don't you think? Russia can be concerned if one of these countries is a direct enemy to it, but today nobody that is friends with the Ukraine fits that bill. They don't get to invade another country because they don't want to be friends with them anymore.

-Foreign policy and National defense is not strictly predicated on the current moment and present events.

Are you suggesting we would not abject to any sizable "potential" threat from invading our Hemisphere? Why would you think a Country like Russia with their history of allowing it?

-You would be surprised at how many people in Russian (and around the world) see the military adventures we go on and wonder where it ends. I can tell you first hand many people do see Nato as the greatest threat to their security.

I scoffed at this notion as do you but when you look at it from their POV I can now understand their concern.... it mirrors ours were the shoe on the other foot.

-If countries are free to form military ties why did we concern ourselves what The USSR was doing in Cuba? Why are we insistent that we contain the Nuclear capability? (because it is a threat) As is Nato encircling Russia.

-You must admit is is a little odd that we would say "trust us" with your borders, we don't mean you any harm.

A country like Russia can make a lot of mischief for us in the world, selling arms, putting together military pacs, vetoing every thing we wish to accomplish through the UN.

Why not abide by our agreements we made concerning Ukraine? We both promised to not interfere militarily or politically in their affairs and yet we have spent 5 billion propping up those we like and attacking those we don't like.

We brag about it openly.

Just think of the Billions it is now going to cost us, Obama who intended to cut defense is now going to pump billions into Europe's defense, we have pledged billions to Ukraine in help (if they cozy to us) and we already spent 5 bil

to convert Ukraine's political class over to us. Also as Putin inturn moves into our hemisphere we will be forced to respond, these arms races are not cheap.

Thats a lot of money and what do we get in return?

Just sayin.

No, of course, it’s silly. There is an old joke about the state secretary: “How can you tell that John Kerry is lying? Because his lips are moving.” He is paid to do that. I don’t blame him personally, but it’s hard to respond to lies when they are so huge and there are so many of them.

Yes. and thats exactly why Russia feels threatened.. That's why Russia is taking its current actions, to protect itself against NATO aggression.

Threatened? That's ridiculous. Russia has been cooperating with the very NATO you claim they feel threatened by. What's the threat? What territories has any NATO member illegally annexed lately? That's right, none. Russia, on the other hand...

That's why NATO ceased the cooperation it had established with Russia, by the way.
