and steve: I took shop instead of home ec in jr high; I already knew how to cook. I was the one who made dinner for the family most nights growing up. (I also know how to sew, but that comes from having a mother who kept her sewing machine in my room, and taught me as soon as I was old enough to thread a needle)

I have 5 brothers and no sisters, so we all learned how to cook. Even though I consider both my parents forward thinking and my father was never chauvinistic, my mom does all the cooking and is content at keeping my dad out of the kitchen (they are in their 70's). It's hard to deny that not long ago, roles divided by sex were much more rigid than they are today.
