I used to see stores in Amsterdam accepting USD (I don't live there anymore, so I can't say now). Well, do not expect them to give you a change in USD too - it was always in EUR or in Guilders. Although the exchange rate was terrible.

It's not that odd.

you know, growing up 10 miles from the Canadian border this really isn't a big deal at all -- many businesses in detroit accept canadian and many windsor places US. Most places charged canadian at a rate that is a very favorable exchangr to the establishment. No big whoop.

yet dallas is over 400 miles from mexico.

i'm wondering which will happen first - the pizza delivery chain goes broke due to the devaluation of the peso overnight or they go broke over the exchange fees.

Even though Dallas is 400 miles from Mexico it probably has something to do with the number of flights going back and forth to Mexico City every day. We just got back from Mexico and Dallas was our layover going down and coming back. We had some pesos left over, we want to keep ours, but if I had been able to find a pizza shop willing to take them, you can be darn sure I would have been having me some pizza.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

either they'll have to inflate the price of the pizza to make up for the probability of devaluation, plus there is the fee at the bank for changing foreign currency. either way, that pizza will cost you more in pesos than in dollars.

... that pizza will cost you more in pesos than in dollars.

Exactly. In exchange, the business provides the customer a convenient and tasty way to get rid of those pesos that might otherwise get lost under the mattress.

Omg yes it always happens that way...I come back from Mexico thinking I've left all my leftover pesos with Javier, and sure enough there's some left over...they always end up getting lost.

I know. I find Indian currency in the most unlikeliest places. It's as if foreign currency walks around the house and hides at night.

Foreign currency is not the only thing that does that!

I'm amused that this has become about illegal immigration. How many illegal immigrants do you think are flying back and forth from DFW to Mexico City and accumulating extra pesos?

Probably a good marketing ploy for a company that targets the Hispanic community. Certainly no weirder than Toronto, Niagara Falls (CA), and Windsor accepting foreign currency.

I have toonies all over my damn apartment. They don't seem to be in my purse in Canada, just in Connecticut.

LOL I have the same damn problem with euros and the Brazilian reais. Now if I could just find a restaurant serving Brazilian or European food to take it off my hands....
