I arrived on k1 and have applied for adjustment of status, still about 6 weeks until permission comes through. I have the opportunity to volunteer somewhere that will most likely be able to offer me a paid position once my EAD comes in, is it legal to volunteer there in mean time? or is it considered job hunting which I believe I read somewhere is not allowed

you are not allowed to volunteer for a position that will turn into a paid job once you have an EAD/green card. You could volunterr in some other area as long as it isn't something they would currently pay someone for .

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Volunteering is allowed for such things as charity. Volunteering is NOT allowed if you will receive any form of compensation, such as: money, future paid position, work experience, etc.

that sucks,

such a strange rule because surely they want me to get a job asap so can start contributing to society, I don't understand it

ah well, 6 weeks to go, have to hope that the position still available then but I highly doubt it

It's not a strange rule. It's a rule to protect US workers from unauthorized workers who will "volunteer."

US jobs are for people authorized to work in the US.

US jobs are not "volunteer positions" for those not authorized for work.

How do you think an American would feel knowing he/she didn't get the job so a foreign person not authorized to work could take the job as a "volunteer position?"

but I will have my work permission eventually anyway so im gona be plucking a job out of the pool for us citizens anyway

also iv had to turn down a few jobs since being here because of no EAD so it doesn't seem like theres a massive job shortage

regretting not going down the CR1 route now so could have immediate work permission

The magic word is "eventually."

Eventually, I will qualify to drive (work) when I get my driver license (work authorization).

By your logic, since I will eventually get a driver license, Then it's okay for me to drive before getting it?

Who do you think took those jobs that you were not authorized to do? Those jobs aren't going unfilled are they?

Think of the EAD as your license to work.

If you can get the organisation to make you a job offer, you could try requesting an expedite for the EAD based on the job offer. See: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/453753-how-to-request-to-expedite-your-ead-based-on-a-job-offer/
