After getting married where and how to change last name on the documents?

Hi all. We will be doing court wedding next week. I want to change my last name after getting married what is the procedure to change it?

Should I sign with the changed last name at the time of court wedding?

You change your name when you fill out the aos.

And when you get your ssn, you go with you marriage certificate to the ss ofice and you will get your ssn with your new name.

When you fill out the forms for aos, you write your new last name.

And at the court weding you sing with your actual name because your new name start after get married.

There's no procedure. As soon as you get married you can start using your married name.

You will probably sign with your maiden name since that's your legal name until you are married. But from the moment you are married, you can legally go by your married name. The marriage certificate is the legal proof of name change, regardless of whether or not it actually shows you married name.

I am in California so i dont know what the rules are in your state but when you go to the court to get married there is a field you HAVE to complete if you want to officially change your last name. You have to do it in your marriage application/license because they will issue your certificate in that name. Then you can take that official marriage certificate with your new last name to ssn dept , drivers licence etc.. also when fill out your AOS with the new LEGAL last name.

In some states the marriage certificate does have the new married name, in other states it won't. My point was that it doesn't matter either way. You can be in a state where the married name appears on the marriage certificate and use it to prove the legal name change. In other states where the married name doesn't actually appear on the marriage certificate, you can still use the marriage certificate to prove your name change. The marriage certificate is all you need to legally change your name.
