My wife filed her N-400 2 weeks ago, and at the time of filing she did not have a social security number.

However, we would like to apply for a SSN in order for her to get a driver's license in MD.

Will this affect the N-400 processing?

Wow how did she survive all this time without it?

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

When you get a green card the SSN is applied for at the airport. In my case paperwork got lost and I had to take my wife to the local SSA and they ordered the SSN.

If you wife has the green card and no ssn take her to the local SSA with her green card and passport and order a new SSN. It may take a month or so to get it but they can give you a NUMI letter showing one has been ordered. A lot of the DMV's will take the NUMI from the SSA.

Perhaps that is the case for your particular type of visa, but it is definitely not always the case.

For any green card issued after 2002 the process is automatic according to the USCIS Welcome to the United States: A guide for new immigrants Page 27.

I'm pretty sure the process is voluntary, not automatic. As in, you have to check a box in your application for an immigrant visa that says that yes, you want to apply for a social security number.

(I checked your link anyway and the Guide for New Immigrants suggests I'm right)

If the person entered on a K1 getting an SSN is not automatic so that's perfectly possible. You aren't required to have an SSN to file N400 (the field says 'if applicable'). Taxes can be done without an SSN I believe (with a TIN - Tax identification number)

To answer the OP's question - don't think applying for an SSN should affect the N400 processing - 2 different offices.
