Hi everybody,

I came to the USA in 2008 on F-1 visa for master degree, then came to LSU for doctoral degree. I met my wife here, got married 3 weeks ago.

This is my final semester in school. We are doing another wedding in Malaysia in June (which means we're leaving US in late May). We plan to get back to US together in early July.

Which route can I take to get the green card?

File for AoS, including an I-765 (EAD) and I-131 (AP) now, so you'll be able to travel internationally in May without issue.

the AP/EAD card which allows you to work or travel takes 60-90 days to receive after sending in the AOS. I suggest doing it RIGHT NOW! Green card approval can take 6 months to a year or more.

6 - 12 months for AoS is only when adjusting from a K; from anything else it's more in the 3 - 4 month range.

As stated, EAD / AP are usually granted within 90 days of application, with the median being 70 - 80 days.

You probably already know this but please make sure you do not leave the US without the approved AP in hand ;)

If for some strange reason there is a delay in issuing your AP document and it's close to the time you'll need to fly - make an Infopass appointment to see if they will grant you an emergency AP although a wedding doesn't normally constitute as an emergency.

If they don't grant you the emergency AP you will need a plan B for your June wedding (like pushing back the wedding date).

The consequences of leaving the US without the AP document while AOS is pending is not worth it...at all.
