I was always told cell phone plans in the US have way better pricing than here. I pay $39 a month for my koodo phone, I have a galaxy s2, & am super happy with it. But I can't use it in the States since it is locked into Koodo and whatnot. Anyways, my fiance and I were looking to add me to his phone plan and we could have a shared plan..it would be $150 a month, EVERY plan I have looked at with other providers are at least $130 a month. We don't use a ton of data...I never go over my 500mb a month, and I use it regularly at work on my lunch and whatnot. Does anyone know of any plans they share with their significant other that is not going to cost us a crazy amount? We aren't exactly going to be rolling in the dough with me not being able to work & him being a student haha,

If you get your phone unlocked you can use it with at&t, although the above info about t mobile is out of date. $70 a month with get you unlimited everything with lte. $60 if you have metro pcs coverage. If you have the cash I seriously suggest buying a nexus 5 straight from Google. It comes unlocked and works with lte on every gsm carrier in north America except Verizon which means no contracts.

Personally I think the plans here are very expensive. We have verizon. It's 180 a month for two people but im sure we could knock it down a bit because we dont use that much data. The non-contract plans have ####### for service in my area but they do have a good price. But it doesn't do me any good when I cant be understood and cant understand what is being said. Sprint offers unlimited data but doesn't have 4g if thats important to you. Without a smart phone you could get a good deal tho, but the same is true up north. Lol

T-Mobile is a great option as they're aggressive on pricing, contract-free, and offer unlimited international 2G data and text messaging in most countries on post-paid plans.

If you can't unlock your phone you can pick one up from T-Mobile at 0% interest or buy whatever is on eBay or Craigslist.

Check out the prepaid plans as well. My wife pays $27/mo for a GoPhone from AT&T that she picked up at Wal-Mart (no data though). Remember to look over the plans for their costs for calling or texting to Canada. She gets free text messages to Canada, where I have an S3 through AT&T on contract for $80/mo and I don't have free texting to Canada.

My daughter switched to Virgin Mobile USA - if you're in their coverage area (I believe they're part of AT&T as well or T Mobile) you cannot beat their plans - $55 +tax per month for unlimited everything - text, data and voice. You can go with $35 or $45 also depending on your voice needs. You pay for the phones outright of course. They offer the latest Apple phones and relatively recent Androids up to the SIII.

I'd suggest Ultra. I used to have Tmobile paying 50-somethingdollars a month. With Ultra Mobile. I pay 29 dollars a month and have 1000 international minutes included, besides unlimited calls and texts in the US. Since I'm hooked up on our wifi both at home and at work, I don't really need the unlimited data so I have 500mb included. I have had no problems. I bought the simcard on ebay and activated it online after receiving it. Works wonders! The best thing is that you get a phone number that your overseas friends can call and thereafter call your mobile for the same price as had they been calling a phone in their home country.

I agree Niki, any good plan with minutes to Canada is expensive. We have a Verizon Share everything Plan with 2GB of data and 1000minutes to Canada for $163 per month. But we never have shaky reception or dropped calls, I think it's worth the extra money for the coverage.

I just got virgin mobile. I am paying $35, unlimited text and data and 300 talk minutes. I got an awesome phone for $80.. the lg optimus f3

I am planning on dropping our data to 2g. We never get close to the 4g mark, even streaming music. How did you get the added minutes to Canada?! I want that! Because right now im paying the long distance rates if I cant call from google voice and if I can avoid that, I will!

My phone was free on black friday - samsung s4. Hehe

Even if you go over on the data, it's only an extra $10 per GB over your limit. It's worth it to keep it low and work up from there until you find the number that works for you. The name of my plan is "Share Everything Plan Canada & Mexico 1000min 2GB".

My wife also uses Viber to talk and text with her two sisters in Canada because they don't have free long distance on their phones. I think you can talk and text for free with anyone else who has the Viber app on their phone.
