Hi,

I found this on the US social security website so I wanted to know if someone actually received his social security number/card without going to an office as described on their website after 3 weeks : http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnvisa/whatyou_need.htm

Or did you need to go to the office ?

I arrived January 6th and I'm getting married next month and I'd like to deal with getting a number ASAP (I'll make the change of name after, it's not like a few more papers is gonna make a huge difference), I had to fill the DS-160 online and did agree on being issued a number by the Social Security Administration.

Thank you for letting me know how it went for you

You went to the office but did you fill the DS 160 online ?

Since september 2013 they (DOH, NVC, embassies...) are trying to smooth some of the paperwork and one of the thing is a better communication between DOH and SSA upon arrival, so I was wondering if it was actually working.

A K-1 applicant does not fill out a DS-230 or DS-260. That does not pertain to K-1 visa entrants. You must go and apply in person.

Sometimes even those that do enter with a spousal visa have to go in person because their SSN never arrives.

~ Moved from K-1 Process to Social Security Numbers - topic is SSN ~

Just because you signed up to receive your SSN on a DS-160, doesn't mean you will get it in a timely manner (or at all). You need to be proactive and just go to your local SSN office and get your number. You arrived on Jan 6, so for sure your name is already in their database. Go there today and apply in person, you will have your card within a couple weeks.

I believe this is happening only for spousal visas. K-1 holders need to get ssn in the local office.

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.
