Former President Gerald Ford dies at 93

(CNN) -- Former President Gerald Ford, who became president in 1974 after the resignation of Richard Nixon, died Tuesday at age 93, his wife, Betty Ford, told The Associated Press.

The nation's 38th president spent several days in the fall of 2006 at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., for medical tests.

Ford, who has been in frail health the last few years, spent time at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in August for evaluation that led to implantation of a pacemaker. (Posted 11:54 p.m.)

Very unfair to James Brown.

His death is now upstaging that of James Brown. I think James Brown is more of a hero because becoming a president is just luck as long as one is white, while James Brown had to work his tail off to get to where did, especially being black.

Recall that this guy was not even an elected president!

He was chosen to be a member of former US president Ronald Reagan's Council Against Drugs but was arrested several times in the mid-1980s and 90s, and charged with drug and weapons possession.

By 1988, Brown was back behind bars, sentenced to six years for drug, weapons and vehicular charges after a high-speed car chase through Georgia and South Carolina.

The pursuit ended with police shooting out the tires of his truck.

He left prison in 1991.

What I remember about Ford years:

• Trudeau generally making things worse for Canadian taxpayers, and Canuck dollar (C$) declining from US$1.05 to US$0.97 (a mark which it has never again seen from topside)
  
• 'Dief the Chief' retiring from active politics due to age
  
• Indira Gandhi losing her own seat in Lok Sabha and then declaring Emergency--and then losing PM'ship to aged, incompetent Morarji Desai!
