Alright so my parents and I are very distant and don't get along very well and I moved out just a few months ago and got my own apartment. My lawyer says both partner's parents are required to be AWARE of the engagement. Is this true? And will they contact my parents?

No they do not contact your parents unless their was a field investigation checking for fraud or something.

Usually in fraud cases this comes up thats why your lawyer said that. It raises a red flag. But if asked you explain we are distant its a non issue really.

Yes I've looked at it. I make well over the 125% financial requirement. : )

If you are both legal adults, then the US government is not going to require that your parents are aware of the engagement. Privacy laws prevents the US government from discussing private cases with other parties. That includes parents.

You either misunderstood your lawyer, or he is wrong.

Your lawyer is 99% wrong. There are some countries where something like this is required. For example, in the Philippines there is a seminar they have to go to before marrying/emigrating and part of that involves parental permission. (On the part of the Filipino, not the American.)

What feedback are you speaking of? The USCIS doesn't have the timeor resources to call anyone.

I was worried about this too, my parents don't know I'm engaged and would have a fit if they knew (religious differences). After a lot of anxiety over this, the CO didn't bring it up at the interview and nope, my parents (or his parents) were never contacted. Don't worry about it.

They do not call the parents of adult applicants. They may ask sometimes at the K-1 interview if the parents/family have met the fiance(e) and are aware of the relationship/engagement. This would be when the CO is trying to determine if the relationship is genuine or not. Answering honestly that they are not aware because you are estranged and not in contact should be an acceptable answer. They are not going to call your parents and let them know what you are up to, as if you are minor children in trouble for something. They do not have the desire, need, time or funding for that sort of thing.
