I have a possible cosponsor, but she owes the IRS some tax money. I don't know how much. This is kind of a double question: Will this prevent her from being a sponsor? I don't think it will, but I'm asking the experts. smile.png

The second part of my question is: Will the IRS know she is sponsoring someone? She's not trying to get away with not paying, but can't pay it all at once, and doesn't want to get in trouble where the IRS would say "You can sponsor someone but not pay us". As far as I imagine the IRS is completely seperate from this whole process, but would her getting ahold of tax transcipts alert them somehow? And if it did, does it make a difference?

Again, she is not trying to do anything illegal, just doesn't want to get in trouble for cosponsoring.

1. The IRS is indeed totally seperate.

2. Her sponsoring you does not require her to pay anything. She is basically a guarantor saying you will not become a public charge once in the US. So you will not apply for food stamps or other government benefits; if you do she could be responsible.

3. There is nothing illegal about her sponsoring you even if she owes the IRS money. Asking for her tax transcripts will NOT set off any alarms. (I am a registered tax preparer so I know how the IRS operates in this matter.)

Hope that clears it up for you and her! There are few things you can do in life to really help someone that really costs so little. :)

She can also set up a payment plan. If the owed amount does show up, somehow, the fact that she has a payment plan would annul that.

I doubt you will run into issues with her owing money to IRS, I believe there's main sponsor owing other debt like house loans, car loans.

Are those stuff going to be counted against them? but if I am wrong and you did run into issue with CO regarding this issue, do please write a review so that we all will know what will happen in the future idea9dv.gif
