Why White People Won't See "Black Movies"

Well gee let me paraphrase the first paragraph. "By black movies we don't mean movies with black people that white people see" .. If a movie is advertised on its entertainment value guess what.. skin/race does not seem to be a nail in the coffin when judging success. Try to push a movie on a stereotype or specific culture and wave bye-bye to a large part of your audience. I do not find stereotypical humor funny.. I am not going to a movie that pushes that angle.

Also.. I (a male) do not go to romantic movies unless I am forced to by a female... So if the complaint is on black romantic movies, blame the women.

If the movies are good and cover more than stereotypical race humor it can succeed.. "Think like a man" came out last year, had a mostly black cast, it was a well done romantic comedy that had broad appeal and did very well in the box office... so I have to call BS.

I would also ask about this film: why did this movie make over 95% of its money in the US and Canada? The average these days is about 50% ... Why did the rest of the world snub this movie?

Steve Harvey has carved out a niche with advice within the black community, and white folks like him since he does Family Feud.

I'll have to research on how black movies do overseas, mostly I don't hear about it.

Will Smith is ok. I hated Fresh Prince but I've enjoyed many of his movies.

Ice Cube is a legend in my mind. Great music and great movies.

Its hard to make a movie better than Friday.

Remember Ice-T in "Surviving the Game" Seems like that was awesome but it might be one of those that I don't think is awesome anymore. A similar thing happened last time I watched the Crow.

This is what I was talking about.

Steve Mcqueen has brought this up before as to why there aren't better quality black movies. As of this writing, he hasn't gotten an answer yet.

That's just one day.

I mean, good for them, that is awesome. But it's not going to win an Oscar or beat Thor overall. It's just not.

I would like to see better black movies. I guessed Best Man was low budget, but I was surprised when I saw how low it was. That just says to me that no one wants to fund it. Maybe with this one doing well studios would be more interested in higher-budget "black" films.

But, that being said, I would like to see there no longer being a need for "black movies."

Ha, furriners and black people. I picked up my cousins girlfriend at JFK back when I was 19. He couldn't make it because he was stuck out midwest somewhere and didn't have the money for bus fare. She just flew in from India. I didn't have a car I trusted to get that far back then so I took the train and bus and brought her back on the train and bus. SHE WAS SO FREAKIN SCARED on the bus every time a black person came close. And this is someone with absolutely no preset notions of black folk. Just the sight was enough.

You're insane.

I did not say they were not funny, I said *I* do not find them funny.. I could listen to Richard Pryor specials all day and not break a smile.. His humor does not work for me. Chris Rock, laugh like crazy.. Old Eddie Murphy stuff: very funny.

Maybe. But they felt like second rate to me. Not because they were black but probably because they were more edgy. Same with married with children. That doesn't mean I didn't watch all three because I did. And I don't think Martin Lawrence is funny. Which is odd because usually I only like black comedians.

It depends on what you're into. I loved MWC, one of my top 5. Al Bundy is a legend. I think Martin was funny because the supporting cast made it funnier. Without Tommy, Cole, Pam, and Gina, anyone else would have sunk. But as a comedian, check out talking dirty after dark, or when he was on Def Comedy Jam back in the 90's.

I don't understand anything about this thread. What are 'black' movies? Everything about this thread is weird, it's like I stepped into a parallel universe where people are all talking the same language but things make no sense at all.

Anything that has more than 3 black folks in the lead.

Of course not, the last black movie to rack up a bunch of Oscar Nominations was the Color Purple, and they were ripped off.

It would be nice to see as well. I enjoy all types of movies, I wish more minorities would get shots in movies like Gravity and Inception.

Why would I be counting? I don't watch movies based on that type of criteria. I watch a movie because it looks interesting, not because I see a quota of faces with specific cultural traits. This is just bizarre. I hope people don't make movies based on a quota system either. The idea is completely absurd.

Mind you, I am mot a fan of blockbuster type movies anyway, perhaps that's what's being referred to? How does anime and cartoon count in this points system? If there are too many mice in the plot is that a bad thing? I swear I have just stepped into the twilight zone.

There are certain movies and shows that are clearly made for a black audience, and often everyone on the show/movie is black. It's nice to be colorblind, but it's plainly obvious. No one counts people.

I am remembering a slew of really bad shows, like Sister Sister, and something like "best Friends?" I can't remember.

I'll have to check, but I think he is the first black man to host Family Feud. That says something.
