In one of the most absurd exchanges during the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s hearing on the rollout of Obamacare and its website, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked if a man had ever given birth.

U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., asked Sebelius about men purchasing maternity coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

“Now as far as the essential health benefits,” Ellmers said, “Correct me if I’m wrong, do men not have to buy maternity coverage?”

Sebelius did not answer the question directly.

“Policies will cover maternity coverage for the young and the healthy—”

Ellmers interjected, “Including men?”

Sebelius said these policies have benefits whether you use them or not, and some of the benefits include maternity coverage, mental health coverage and domestic violence coverage.

“We’re forcing them to buy things that they will never need,” Ellmers said in closing.

My employer provided policy has covered maternity and women wellness exams for as long as I have it. That's been long before Obamacare came along. Of course I have no use for these coverages but I suspect that my female co-workers that have the very same policies available to them might need them. I also suspect that there are coverages in these policies that are of no use to women and yet they purchase these same plans that have these services covered. It's been that way for as long as group health insurance plans existed. What's the issue?

Do I have to let my male employees take paternity leave?

It depends. If your business is covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the employee is eligible for leave, you must allow the employee to take up to 12 weeks of leave to care for a new child. This leave is unpaid and must be taken within a year of the child's arrival.

Generally, employers are not required to offer paid leave to either parent after a child's birth. However, if you do offer a paid maternity leave benefit, you must offer this leave to new fathers as well as mothers or risk a lawsuit for sex discrimination. In other words, if you offer paid leave, it must be parental leave, not maternal or paternal leave.

In addition, the states of California and New Jersey, as well as the District of Columbia, now provide paid family leave to new mothers and fathers. (The state of Washington has a similar law, but it has not gone into effect due to budgetary constraints.) Many others states are considering paid family leave laws as well.

Another 12 weeks per year per child...... Under Obama care do women have paid leave? Then there is the answer. Both parents will get paid leave. By time we are finished with obama care the country will be bankrupt. //www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/leave-policies-workplace-faq-29088-5.html

Is there a problem if men take family leave? More fathers should take an active role in the rearing of their offspring. After all 3 of my kids were born, my wife took off 12 weeks and then I took off for 6 weeks. And yes I got paid for it. I don't see a problem with staying home to raise the future leaders. If family values are important and not just a "coined" phrase to sound compassionate, all the "family value conservatives" should be embracing this.

The CHOICE of policy is GONE. If you have balls, take your ####### care and deal with it. They need to raise rates via more coverage, all the while they call it BETTER. Example: they charge you for something you will never ever use. Its like charging you flood insurance when you live in the Sahara.
