When I was a student I once got a job making Christmas crackers (Tom Smith). They were the fancy ones that they would sell on to large department stores like Harrods and Liberty etc. They are all made by hand and take on average 10-15 mins to make. The crappy ones took 3-5 mins to make. You kow how much 1 got paid? 10p per fancy cracker. That was the going rate. I lasted an afternoon. From then on I have never bought another cracker, and vow to never again. I hate to think how much the poor buggers in the east get paid to make them. :(

They're not a common U.S. tradition, but I've seen them in Target and a few other stores lately. One of my friends here is British, and he always orders in a box from England for our Christmas party.

I just saw them for the first time here in the states-I was in Genuardi's, our local food store.

Maybe they have been around but I never noticed before

I hate the TJ Maxx advert song! Grrrr. It also bothers me that in the UK it's TK Maxx with a KKKKKKK. What's all this J nonsense. Like when they changed Jif to Cif. If you have any idea what the hell I'm on about...

The "J nonsense" would be the original name of the original company (It's now "The TJX Companies"). TK Maxx was started in 1994. TJ Maxx has been around since 1976. It's the "K nonsense" you need to ponder.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

We had crackers for Wes' first US Christmas last year. Of course my family had not seen them before. Everybody thought they were good fun and all were made to wear the paper crowns.

We saved our own paper crowns for our scrapbook.

I love 'em and as far as I'm concerned they are now a permanent part of Christmas. I like to use them when setting the table - place them in the center of the plate. They make the table look festive and cute!

We saw some in Sur La Table. But they were about $20 for 10. But I got some from my British store, because of all the other goodies they have stocked for me for the rest of the year. I love to support them. :)
