When Can My Wife Get Work Permit Once She Come To The US?

I know she will get green card shortly after she enter US! I want to know is that green card can give her social security number and could work soon? Thanks for all feed back

She can start work the day she arrives as she'll have a greencard (temp stamp in her passport), though most places won't employ her till she has a SSN. This usually arrives in the mail within 3-4 weeks but if you are in a hurry, wait ten days after entry, then go to the local Social Security Office and ask for one.

No need for a work permit with the spousal visa.

Added in a point form the instructions you reference. CR-1 visa holders have the notation on the visa, not a stamp.

Yes, but you will need the SSN for tax withholding. The SSN doesn't have to be a part of your "work authorized" proof, but you still need the number to work.

I think you missunderstood what I wrote- I agree with you SSN is not needed. However, most employers will not accept you without it. Interview and contract yes, start work- possibly, but unlikely.

As a manager who regularly had to review I-9's and their supporting documents, if it is listed as an accepted form of employment authorization, it is accepted

But the worker also needs to fill out a W4, don't they? That requires a SSN, (or maybe an ITIN if a person has it, not sure where all that is useable).

yes correct they need the ss for the w4

I did one of these several years back and honestly I just don't remember how it all got put through, but we hired her and it was fine

maybe I will get my wife to get a job in November before the ss number comes and I will come back and let you know how it works

I get the same dreamy feeling all the time

it is a magical place and really beautiful people

I stayed almost a year

good news is that I can live like a king on Social Security out there.. so do the time here for another 15 years or so, and then I am so outta here
