My husband just moved here from Portugal--approved and everything, and on the last form we filled out, we checked "YES" to apply for social security card...so now we're just waiting on that card to come in the mail. About how long does it take? He can't apply to jobs without it, can he?

Thanks,

eav

Timeframes are different depending on the State. My hubby and kids got theirs a month after POE (L.A.), same with their green cards.

I had to go apply for my SSN card at the SSA office. Did so after about 3 weeks in the USA (she checked first to see if one was already being mailed to me, it wasn't) and it arrived about a month after being here.

According to this article it can take up to 4 weeks to get your Social Security card.

However, you won't need the actual card to apply for a job, just the number. And they'll tell you your SSN right in the office when you apply for it.

In North Carolina since 2005
