A Seattle man accused of instigating a gunfight during which a young woman was shot dead at a Renton park has been charged with assault.

Currently on the loose, Linzy Jerome Hopkins is accused of turning a May 22 brawl into a shootout when he drew a pistol and opened fire. Bystander Lonnie Reynolds, 20, was caught in the crossfire and fatally wounded.

King County prosecutors have charged Hopkins, 30, with assault and unlawful gun possession; neither he nor the man he’s accused of trading shots with have been charged in Reynolds’ death. A Prosecutor’s Office spokesman said her death remains under investigation and declined to say which of the men is believed to have fired the fatal shot.

holders have slain seven law enforcement officers resulting in criminal charges or the

I don't think this makes a case against allowing concealed carry. The apparent bad guy here had a gun but no permit for it. The guy with the concealed carry

permit (according to the story fired after the bad guy tried to shoot somebody in the head)

A convicted drug offender and identity thief, Hopkins is at large. Investigators suspect the 300-pound, 6- foot man may have fled to Mexico.

While the investigation remains ongoing, Renton police contend the shooting that claimed Reynolds’ life began as a confrontation between two groups at Liberty Park, located at 1402 Houser Way North. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras installed at the park.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., Hopkins and several associates arrived at the park by car and were confronted by another large group that included Reynolds, a Renton detective told the court. Two women began fighting shortly thereafter.

A man from the group that included Reynolds moved in to break up the fight, the Renton detective told the court. Hopkins followed him in, the detective continued, and began pistol-whipping him.

According to the detective’s statement, Hopkins then began shooting at another man associated with Reynolds’ group, a concealed pistol permit holder who’d brought his gun to the fight at the public park. That man returned fire while crouched near a light pole.

While neither gunman was injured in the shooting that followed, Reynolds – who is not noted as having been involved in the fight at any point – was shot in the torso and collapsed. Rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Reynolds clung to life for more than 13 hours before dying.

Writing the court, the detective noted that the Hopkins and the other shooter were armed with different caliber handguns. Still, neither police nor the Prosecutor’s Office has said which gunman is believed to have fired the fatal shot.

Hopkins and his associates fled the area by car, while the second shooter was arrested near the shooting scene, according to charging papers.

Speaking with police, the man Hopkins is alleged to have shot at said his friend – the man Hopkins is accused of pistol-whipping – told him there was going to be a fight at the park.

The man told police he walked to the area where Hopkins’ group drove to. He said he hung back after one of his associates said someone in the other group was armed. Offering a statement supported by video of the shootout, the man said he kept his pistol tucked away until Hopkins started shooting.

According to charging papers, second shooter said Hopkins actually tried to execute the first man to rush into the fight. Holding a pistol to the man’s head, Hopkins pulled the trigger; the gun failed to fire.

Police contend at least three people have identified Hopkins as the gunman.

A seven-time convicted felon, Hopkins was most recently convicted of identity theft and has previously been convicted of unlawful gun possession.

Prosecutors have asked that Hopkins be held on $2 million bail if he is apprehended. He has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault as well as unlawful gun possession.

The Felon then put his illegal gun to the head of the victim and pulled the trigger, but then gun failed to fire.

A known drug and identity thief felon (Hopkins) then started shooting into the group and at the man who had the legal concealed carry permit..The man with the legal gun drew and returned fire causing the Felon to stop shooting and flee the scene.
