Tax return question

Hi everyone. I hope you are all doing well. I have a question about my tax returns that need to be submitted. I am sure there's an answer here somewhere but I'm not sure where.

QUESTION: I was living overseas in 2012, so I do not have an income tax return for that year. Do I need a statement from the IRS or do I just write something stating I did not have a tax return during that year? I make good money at my current job and the job I had before I moved overseas. I just don't know what to do about that specific year.

Thank you for your time. I wish you all well on your journey. I am praying it goes quickly and smoothly for us all. goofy.gif

Hi there,

US citizens living abroad do need to file a US tax return every year, even though many will not have a tax liability in the US. Just go ahead and file for 2012. If you e-file it should be processed quickly, and then get a tax return transcript (free) from the IRS.

Good luck!

I should file a tax return even if I had no income? I did not have an income overseas.

That's incorrect. You do not need to file if you have zero income.

Yes, even if you had no income. Just fill in zeros (appropriately).

Incorrect. A single person who earned less than $9750 does NOT need to file.

To OP, yes just provide a statement explaining why you weren't required to file.

If you made good money before and after living overseas, then I suggest you provide your 2011 tax transcript and a statement (no need for anything from the IRS) as to why you were not legally required to file for 2012. Include the information that you were living overseas at the time, and that is why you had no income for that time period. Then, supply a letter from your current employer and most recent pay stubs to show your current income.
