hello everyone, my two sons ages 19 and 21 both are US permanent resident decided to go back to philippines to continue and finish their teaching degree there. Do you know if the US will recognize their degree when they come back here in US after they got their degree and look for employment? Please share your opinion if it is a good idea for my sons to finish their education in Philippines or not.

Thank you so much!

Difficult enough for those with US qualifications.

You need to speak to the school district they are interested in.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I'm guessing no. Most states don't even accept other states' teaching credentials, although they may give a temporary waiver. They usually require that they eventually return to school for at least a few courses, if not many, to get their state credential.

From a different country though - I'm guessing the state will require they go through the full teaching training as well as exams to demonstrate english proficiency.

They may accept their bachelor's degree however, for the degree requirement.

Have you consider how much less it would cost for your sons to attend two years at a community college? Have you considered your sons will probably qualify for financial aid?

Tuition at Miramar Community College in San Diego is about $2000 per year. My niece is living at home and going there. She gets financial aid which covers all of her tuition. All she pays for are books.

She plans to get her AA and then get her BA at San Diego State Unicersity where tuition is about $7,000 per year. She is counting on financial aid to cover most of her tuition.

Thank you for all your comments. My oldest son is willing to go back to Phil to finish his college there, my youngest wants here in US. He cannot avail financial aid due to my income as a Teacher.

I really appreciate your opinion. thank you so much for your time and for your reply.

When I lived in Cebu I met a few Americans that came to Cebu on the Army College Fund route. They studied at San Carlos in Cebu. They claimed that a degree from UCC is accredited with the USA. I knew of a few other Universities that were accredited up in Manila. I do not recall their names. I do know costs would be around 150,000p per year which is expensive for Philippines. At that price a Community College in USA may be better....

I graduated with a bachelors degree from UP (speech pathology). My degree was recognized for education purposes (meaning I was able to go to grad school right away- no additional courses), but they would not recognize it for work until I did my masters here :) now my teaching certificate was just approved :)

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

If you are a teacher why don't you consult the school board, perhaps the certification department to see if their qualifications will transfer

good luck
