I also find it interesting this think-tanker brought up our prison population....GOOD! This is true all across the US. Maybe we can step it up and become humane and civilized like Singapore. I cannot stand we live in a country where prisons=capitalist free for all. It's embarassing.

It also sickens me that he finds it ridiculous it took 25 years of appeals to kill someone via state-sponsored murder. Tookie is the prime example of a rehabiliated criminal, but this isn't valued in CA or anywhere in the US.

so you want to bring back whipping with a cane then

Of course not, but if there was a choice between a spanking and capital murder, I'd choose the cane. Bizarre that you'd equate the two.

just as i find it bizarre you'd equate singapore with being civilized after that uproar about that american teen being caned for scratching cars.

and tookie took about 23 years too long to get his reward ;)

What should the teen's punishment have been? Since I'm gathering you believe people should pay for their crimes, what would have been a better punishment for this kid?

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

Oh he believes it alright. It applies to everyone except him, his family, the people he likes, and most anyone who is or looks American.

Yes, Singapore is so civilized.

The original author compared California's prison population to that of several countries combined, including Singapore. My point is not to defend Singapore, but to comment on the disgusting way we imprison and murder our own citizens. I hardly think you can put the US on a pedestal because Singapore has an automatic death penalty. It's all disgusting.

I agree. We should make drugs legal & tax the hell out of them. You won't have drug offenders swelling the prison system, the taxes will more than pay for treatment centers, and the drug lords, pushers, and gangs are out of business.

And dump the death penalty. Life in prison is plenty good punishment for the most heinous of crimes, and if the state has made a mistake the falsely imprisoned gets the rest of his life back.

I agree on both counts.

Liquor is more damaging than most 'illegal' drugs.

I'm not morally opposed to the death penalty but I feel it's just too expensive to kill someone with the many costly appeals.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. Well.... the article certainly had some interesting statistics. Maybe if more people were aware of them they wouldn't be so hot to move here.

Besides, it's already overcrowded, we don't need any more people.

:P

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.
