A buddy of mine met a girl online and went out there, knocked her up and married her. He came back tonthe US right after the wedding and is now in the middle of the visa process. The problem is the guy is a total loser. He's 30, lives at home, hasn't held a job in years, has serious personality problems, and cheats on his wife. Hell, she doesn't even know he smokes. I could go on and on about the weirdness of the situation. He may be getting a job soon but I have my doubts about his ability to maintain it. And then add in the stress of a baby and wife.. Woof.

I'm worried for this girl. She's going to leave her family and home for this bum she really doesn't know. Will immigration really approve this visa just cause they have a baby and he has a co-sponsor?

The baby won;t make much difference.

The co-sponsor is needed for approval, but does not mean he will definitely approved.

It will all depend on whether they can proof they have a bonafide marriage- even "loosers without a job" can be in love. If they know a lot about eachother (and it is unlikely they will ask her if he smokes), that will help an approval, as will several meetings and time spent together.

Nothing you say makes your buddy legally ineligible to sponsor a spouse. If he's the kind of loser who has a criminal record that includes convictions for sexual crimes against children, that would make hm ineligible. If the couple can't prove a bona fide relationship, that may scotch the deal.

You know the situation best, I suppose, but things are not always as they seem. It's possible, though unrealistic, that they really genuinely love each other. The baby could be a wake-up call for him to get his life straightened out. The cheating is unforgiveable, if you know it's really cheating and not "being seen with an ex-girlfriend in a bar". For both their sakes, please try to be as positive as your knowledge of the situation allows. They're going to need their friends.

I'm a dual US/Hungarian citizen (both by birth; Hungarian citizenship verification TBA), and my husband is a dual British/Irish citizen (by treaty) from Northern Ireland. We are atheists.

The whole thing seems unjust but what do I know? And yes, it's real cheating. He says he loves his wife but the dudes got some serious problems and doesn't listen to reason or want to be honest with himself or anyone else. Well, thanks for the input. Edited by word-of-caution

Well, if she wants to stay in the US, there's a provision for people who suffer domestic violence. Unfortunately it looks really bad to Immigration for her to come over and then immediately get divorced. If they get a co-sponsor later, that co-sponsor will undoubtedly be called upon to be responsible for any public benefits she receives. Yes, I know all isn't unicorns and rainbows, and your buddy sounds like someone I wouldn't want to be friends with for long. But I try to be positive. Good luck to you and to her.
