A University of Wyoming student targeted by an anonymous Facebook posting that included a threat of sexual violence had posted the item herself, police said.

The university in Laramie, Wyoming announced on Tuesday that campus police cited Meg Lanker-Simons for misdemeanor interference with a police investigation by giving false statements.

The posting that threatened Lanker-Simons occurred on a Facebook forum for UW students, leading to an outcry and an investigation by UW police because it was directed at a student.

The Facebook page, which is not officially affiliated with the university, was taken down and a student-led demonstration against sexual violence was held.

UW police say they found what they called 'substantial evidence' verifying that the post came from the computer belonging to Lanker-Simons.

Lanker-Simons is a blogger and local radio show host who advocates for liberal causes.

In 2010, she filed a lawsuit against the university that forced UW to allow 1960s radical Bill Ayers on the campus for a speech on education.

Ayers co-founded the Weather Underground, an anti-war group from the Vietnam Era that claimed to be responsible for a series of bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

The Facebook post came to light last week when people including Pamela Kandt, co-convener of the Episcopal Women's Caucus and a Casper activist, complained to the university and demanded action.

Besides the threat of sexual assault, the posting was written to make it appear as if its author was a conservative Republican.

Kandt came to Lanker-Simons' defense Tuesday.

'I will tell you, I believe Meg is innocent of this outrage,' Kandt told the Laramie Boomerang, adding she believes the citation issued by police is a 'classic case of blaming the victim.'

'I mean, my God, who would do this to herself?' she added.

Attorney Charles Pelkey, who is representing Lanker-Simons in the matter, declined to comment until he sees more details on the case.

UW Police: Facebook post was a hoax -- UPDATED

The University of Wyoming Police Department issued a citation Monday afternoon in Albany County Circuit Court for Meg Lanker-Simons, a woman allegedly threatened last week in a social media post authorities now contend was a hoax.

The citation is for interference, a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment up to a year and a fine up to $1,000.

"Subject admitted to making a controversial post on UW Crushes webpage and then lied about not doing it," according to the citation.

She is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. May 13 in Circuit Court.

The post was made to the UW Crushes page April 24 on Facebook and described Lanker-Simons as "that chick that runs her liberal mouth all the time and doesn't care who knows it."

The post also referenced a graphic, sexual act against Lanker-Simons.

"One night with me and shes gonna be a good Republican (expletive)," the post read.

The post created a stir on social media and at the university, with school officials issuing statements denouncing the post against Lanker-Simons and campus police opening an investigation.

Lanker-Simons could not be reached for comment.

UW released a statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the citation.

"This episode has sparked an important discussion reaffirming that the UW community has no tolerance for sexual violence or violence of any type," UW spokesman Chad Baldwin said. "The fact that the Facebook post apparently was a fabrication does not change the necessity for continued vigilance in reassuring that we have a campus where everyone feels safe.

"It's important that this event does not undermine the progress that has been made in this area."

According to the UW statement, Lanker-Simons received the citation as a "result of false statements she made to the UW Police Department."

The citation followed a police interview of Lanker-Simons and a search of her computer equipment pursuant to a warrant, UW reported.

UW Police "obtained substantial evidence verifying that the offending Facebook post came from Lanker-Simons' computer, while the computer was in her possession."

Pamela Kandt, co-convener of the Episcopal Women's Caucus and a Casper activist, came to Lanker-Simons' defense Tuesday.

Last week, after the controversial post went public, Kandt lobbied university officials for a "swift response to this outrage."

"I will tell you, I believe Meg is innocent of this outrage," said Kandt, adding she believes the citation issued by police is a "classic case of blaming the victim."

Kandt said she has spoken with Lanker-Simons following the citation's issuance.

UW Police, Kandt said, "have bullied her and they have pulled a bluff."

"This is the worst episode of 'Law & Order' you can imagine," Kandt said.

She added, "I mean, my God, who would do this to herself?"

What lengths that the radical left will go to to frame a conservative. She should be doing the same amount of time as the person she tied to frame.if convicted.

Here is one rape story gone bad,

When Andrew Johnson realized he would be released on bond Wednesday after nearly 24 years behind bars, he had one pressing concern for his supporters. Motioning up and down at his orange-striped prison garb to Rocky Mountain Innocence Center advocates, he worried, “In this?”

“We said, ‘Don’t worry, we have you covered,’” said Jennifer Hare Salem, executive director of the innocence center. “’You’re going to look good.”’

A few weeks earlier, board members at the innocence center had pitched in to equip Johnson with all his sartorial needs upon his release.

“Everyone was really excited about it,” Salem said. “We wanted him to walk out with the dignity that he deserves.”

Shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson took his first step from the Laramie County Jail onto the slushy streets of Cheyenne in a meticulously tailored suit, a powder blue tie and brown boots. His first words outside were, “It’s cold.”

A day earlier, Laramie County District Judge Thomas Campbell ordered a retrial for a 1989 Cheyenne rape case that landed Johnson a life sentence in prison. Newly tested DNA evidence proved he wasn't a match to the sperm found in the victim’s rape kit.

a 1989 Cheyenne rape case that landed Johnson a life sentence in prison......This is what the accuser should be charged with...Life in prison as she tried to make someone else do a possible life sentence in this hoax.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. Doesn't the radical right do similar stuff?

"Radical Right" is an oxymoron. I believe the term you are looking for is "Reactionary". Once you move past them on the spectrum, you dip into the realm of "Anarchy", which means you have gone full circle and come up on the other side.

This is one person that did something stupid, we should not be making it a larger story than that... If someone else had been charged with a crime because of a false allegation then we have a victim... then it is newsworthy.

Assuming it's true - and no doubt we will hear at least one more level of conspiracy where the right are accused of sneaking onto her computer to discredit her - but if it is true then she has discredited herself for life. That is worse than any punishment that could be given.

of course.. neither side has any claim to high moral ground. They both are really good at pointing fingers though.

So, this was a radical leftist chick? (Apologies, I never understand what 'Liberal' means, def changes weekly) .

And she did this to herself?

Bah - expel her from school, take away her financial aid, and don't allow her to take any final exams this semester.

Plus whatever else law enforcement and judicial want to do with her.

If her Google-Fu is stellar, she'll be on VJ, writing up reactionary prose in this here topic. Yay !

Not really. It's more common on the left.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

That's probably true. The reactionary right is too busy making up conspiracy theories on everything and imagining any day every democrat ever born, will soon be impeached, excommunicated and deported, so America will be safe for real Americans.
