Hi y'all!! Tomorrow we are going to SSA im trying to change my last name and we are getting him his social security number but i was reading this:

****We issue three types of Social Security cards. All cards show your name and Social Security number.

1.Shows your name and Social Security number and lets you work without restriction.

We issue it to:

U.S. citizens; and

People lawfully admitted to the United States on a permanent basis.

2.Shows your name and number and notes, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” We issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who have DHS authorization to work.

3.Shows your name and number and notes, “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT.”

We issue it to people from other countries:

Who are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but with a valid nonwork reason for needing a Social Security number; or

Who need a number because of a federal law requiring a Social Security number to get a benefit or service.****

will we be able to get it for him or do i have to give them a reason to get it???

Well basically the reason is that he is a spouse of an us citizen but MORE important :K1 visa holders are allow to get a SSN but he is not allow to work or travel until he apply for his AOS and get at least his work permit. Some ssn staff doesnt know that a k1 visa holder can get a ssn so if you make a quick search here, you will find a chart where it states all the cases the where the ssn can be issue. Printed and take it with you just in case. But the I94 MUST BE still valid AT LEAST 3 weeks before the expiration date. In my case I went a week before my i94 exp date and they couldnt issued me my ssn. So i need to wait for my work permit to get it

If there is more than 2 weeks before his I-94 expires, then go to the SSA and apply for his SSN. He will get a card like the one I bolded from #2 of your post. He will need the SSN plus his EAD(which is the DHS authorization) in order to work> http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Once he gets his green card, he can update his status with the SSA and receive a new SS card without that stipulation printed on it.

Hi guys,

My husband and I are just finalizing his paperwork to send out for the AOS process, and work permission and we applied for his SS# a few weeks ago. The other day we received his SS# card in the mail with "Work Authorization from DHS required" written on it. Has anyone received their card before they received permanent residency or work permission? I realize once he gets permission we'll probably have to return to SS to get a new card, but I'm just curious as to whether we should put the SS number on the paperwork before we send it out or not, since I still can't believe we got it already. Any thoughts? I appreciate your help!! Thanks-

Lots of people get their SSN before the EAD or green card. The SSN can be applied for not long after entering the US. The EAD takes 2-3 months to receive after filing for AOS.

You must have an SSN and work authorization, the EAD, in order to work. The SSN is supposed to come with that notation on it. You cannot have the notation removed until he is granted permanent residency. He can go back to the SSA when he gets his green card to get a new card without that printed on it. The number will remain the same, and is perfectly fine to use on anything asking for his SSN from now on.

You don't even need to get a new card unless the wording really bothers you for some reason. Nobody asks to see your card anywhere, so it doesn't matter at all what it says on it. The number stays the same. I still have my card with "only with INS authorization" written on it from when I immigrated 18 years ago. Never had any problems applying for a job. Nobody has ever asked to see my card, they all just ask for the number.
