Is there any way of getting around the affidavit of support? My fiance is self employed and likes to keep a low tax profile

I will be interviewed in Japan - is the affidavit important ? I am worried

The affadavit of support is very important. Without it, the visa cannot be approved. What does "low tax profile" mean?

You have to prove that you will not be a public charge, so he will either need a co-sponsor or your petition will be denied.

The affidavit of support is a big deal, there's no way around it, so make sure he knows that. Even if he gets a co-sponsor, he'll need to send an affidavit himself and show his tax returns for the past three years.

I think this is the time for you two to have a conversation.

Best of luck!

One of the most important aspects is how you will be supported. At some point he will have to prove his tax status. Right now its sounds like he may not want contact with the IRS.

These visas are about complying with the laws of the USA. That includes the tax laws.

This is only the first step where Affidavit of Support is required and it won't be the last.

For your entire visa journey, your fiancee/husband will have to submit his Income Tax Returns (ITR) and W2 for your Adjustment of Status (AOS) and again when you undergo Removal of Conditions (ROC).

If he's not willing to submit his tax returns now, don't expect you'll get a visa. Sorry.
