So Ive read all the forums and i can understand most of it, ive prepared our K1 Visa Application, we've got all our paperwork and photos and proof etc etc. but now i have a question about the medical examination.

Clearly we have to lodge my visa before I take my medical examination but i was wondering . . . If once we lodge my visa application can i then organise to have my medical done in my home country of Australia, is there a time limit or lenght before i leave for America to get it done? or do I have to wait for it to be approved before i get a medical examination?

Thank you so much for all your help so far

Regards

Your fiance petitions you first, once the petition is approved you send some paperwork in, then arrange a medical before your interview. The whole thing from your US fiance sending in the first round of paperwork to the medical and interview takes 7+ months, so you have some time.

Once the USCIS approves your petition, the US embassy in your country will send you (either by mail or email) packet 3 which is where they will give you instructions for your medical... so that's when you can have the examination, not before

None of the other answers are entirely correct for Australia. Please remember this is country specific information at the visa stage.

The process is thus:

- Petition receipt aka NOA1 (USC files this)

- Petition approval aka NOA2 (about 5-7 months until approval I believe)

- NVC Receipt (this tells you your case has been forwarded to Syd with your SYD case number)

- Packet 3 aka P3 (tells you about police check, medical etc required)

- Packet 4 aka P4 (interview date - only sent AFTER you send them P3)

Depending on your state you might be able to do the medical before the SYD case number. This is the case for Vic (Melb specifically) at least.

I had planned to do the medical and police check around the time NOA2 was expected to be approved (based on others timelines) so that it could be quicker. By the time I did my medical though the NOA2 had been approved and I had my SYD case number. My police check took longer than it's supposed to so I'm glad I did that early too.

SO - to answer your question. Don't do it too early because if your process takes too long (though unlikely, still possible) it will expire and you'll need to do it again (valid for 12 months). Depending on your state your doc may not require the SYD case number for you to do the medical. So call the doc in your state and ask.

Here is what you (or your USC fiance/e) will be emailed after NOA2: http://canberra.usembassy.gov/fiance_niv_appl.html this is Packet 3. You can start getting all the forms etc completed now (just don't date or sign them) so that you can do a quick turnaround. I personally advise looking at current timelines and arranging your police check and medical for around the time when you should expect NOA2 approval. This will minimise your wait time and lower the risk of expiry of docs.

Your fiance petitions you first, once the petition is approved you send some paperwork in, then arrange a medical before your interview. The whole thing from your US fiance sending in the first round of paperwork to the medical and interview takes 7+ months, so you have some time.

Sorry. Incorrect for Australia. In our case we need to send the medical WITH the P3 paperwork. The medical and police check are done and mailed in BEFORE the interview can be scheduled.

Once the USCIS approves your petition, the US embassy in your country will send you (either by mail or email) packet 3 which is where they will give you instructions for your medical... so that's when you can have the examination, not before

Incorrect for Australia. Depends on her state whether her doc will require the SYD case number.

P3 information for Australia is available online. We are emailed a link to the information.
