Hi! So I got married last month and we are about to start the CR1 visa process. From what I read on the embassy website the process doesn't seem to be THAT dificult. Everyone on here makes it seem so hard. Am I missing something? Anyway, the website says that everything needs to be translated. Is there a list of official translators on the website for the country that we reside (Peru)? Also it says the fee is 450 dollars or something like that, but here on visajourney it says that the CR1 visa will cost about 1000 dollars. What else do I need to account for? Getting a laywer is not necessary right? I also read something about a medical exam today on visajourney, but I didn't read anything about a medical exam on the US website. Thanks you guys are the best!

There is no list of translators as such but people from your area may be able to give you some if they used them.

$450 is the first of many fees. You also have to pay for the medical which is quite pricey and the AOS/interview. As well as the fee to USCIS which is $165 before you enter the USA.

Have a look at the guides if you have not yet looked at them.

For some depending on the country or the circumstances, this process can be very difficult. It is in the very least, time consuming and expensive. The filing fee for the I-130 is $420, the fee for the affidavit of support is $88, the fee for the immigrant visa application is $230. there is a fee for the medical exam in the country your spouse will be interviewing in, it varies but plan at at least a few hundred dollars for that, and there is a $165 fee for the green card itself. Add in fees for marriage and birth certificates, police clearance certificates, money for postage, translation of documents and any other various fees, and this process could easily be in the thousands. If your case is straightforward you do not need an attorney. You can use the guides at the top of this page for guidance. Good luck on your journey!!!

Ok great thanks for the responses. So I am assuming that the US doesn't require a offical translator, because Peru did. I had to get my documents translated from an offical list of companies. Hummm that is so odd that the US website makes it seem like the process is so straighforward and easy. I wonder why they would do that? Well the process should begin soon and we are hoping to get an expodited case!

Up until March 1, 2013, Peru actually offered DCF. Now it's just for special circumstances. So that may be why the US Embassy website differs from what you read on here. You used to be able to be super fast in Peru, but no longer unless you have special circumstances.

Forget the embassy for now !!! They only come into play much later in the process. And this really is a piece of cake. Almost every case you see here that went wrong was either because they didn't follow the instructions or they had something in their history that raised a red flag. Peru is not a high fraud country and things should be smooth.

As to translation, anybody can do the translation, including you !! All you/they have to do is provide a letter in the following format which is right from the USCIS website.

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Yeah I have seen the guide, but not the flow chart. It's so odd that the info I get here doesn't necessarily seem to coincide with the info I get on the US Embassy website...?!?!

The guides give you a general guideline. Each embassy has its own particular requirements that you should follow.
