My husband and i went to go get his ssn and they told us we had to wait 14 days. Done. So we are on our way today to get the ssn. They mentioned that they will ask us questions like when did he arrive. Can they do that? Is anyone familiar with this?

nothing to hide. I just don't want to answer questions wrong and get into trouble.

I also want to make sure that the person just isn't prying into my personal business. I do live in a small mountain community and people love gossip

If you are telling the truth, what could you possibly get wrong? There's only one date that the person entered legally, right? Really, what's the issue with that, unless you are afraid of letting something slip...

Anyways, its Social Security, not USCIS. If you slip up with them, you probably won't get deported or anything since they aren't immigration.

Nothing wrong about asking when has he arrived.. As said, there's only one right answer to that question! They just just want to check his immigration status in order to see if he's legal and authorized to get a SSN. So they will surely ask for his passport, visa or whatever proves his identity and legality in the US.

They are not going to ask him how much money he has in his bank account or anything else, if that's what you're worried about.

We went and they just asked for the EAD and passport. No questions. I wasnt worried about letting anything slip. I just wondered what are they allowed to ask. Some people tend to abuse their authority and ask many questions. The lady said my husband can come back after he gets his gc and update but to wait 2 weeks.

I've been in that kind of situation actually. all they will ask you is your passport, they will check the I-94 of your husband if it's still valid or not. and mostly no questions. I didn't get ssn that time because my I-94 got expired. 14 days is normal because some offices of social security administration had a policy of 1 month or something like that. don't worry about questions like when did he arrive because they will see it in his passport. You just tell them if when did he exactly arrive in USA. in his I-94 shows when it will expire. for example I arrive here september 27 and the expiration date of my I-94 is December 25, as long as you didn't exceed yet to the expiration date of your I-94, you can still get an ssn but if it's expired you don't need to bother yourself to go and get one or even attempt to get one because you'll just be refuse.
