I recently went and visited my fiancée in Brazil between the middle of November and the end of January. In doing so, I had to abandon my retail job in which I made well over the poverty limit, but still rendered me unemployed for the time being. I've got another job which starts the end of this month, making similiar money, and I'm filing the I-129F this week. Should I just hold off on sending the affidavit/financial support documents to my fiancée until I've worked for a few months? (Which is contrary to the general suggestion of sending it right after NOA2). I'm thinking of having my fiancée visit me using her visa waiver during the processing period, so perhaps I can just have her take it back down to Brazil with her when she goes?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide. This site is great! :)

I-134 affadavit of support for fiance visa is usually brought to interview- that is 6-ish month away, so you will be fine if you file now and get a job around now too.

IIRC, the affidavit of support is not required with the I-129F petition. It's needed after NOA2, which is when the I-129F petition is approved, probably around 6 months from filing. I would go with waiting until you get the NOA2, since I think that current data is preferable when submitting the required documents at that stage. Plus, as you mentioned, she can just bring it back with her after her visit to you, which would save on postage.

Good luck. :)

I am (usually) the beneficiary.

I think something that'll work in my favor is that the consulate in Rio de Janeiro seems fairly relaxed. Regardless, I'm going to bust my a** with work in these next 6 months as much as I humanly possibly can.

If you are just now filing your I-129f petition, it is way too early to send the I-134 to your fiancee. This is only needed for the interview, and you are looking at the least a 6 month wait (possibly 6 to 8 months depending how long it takes to get an interview). For the I-134 they are looking more for current income, so as long as your current income is OK you shouldn't have any problems.

When I filed my affidavit of support, I had 2 jobs--one I had worked at for over a year, the second I just started in July. My income was not sufficient with just the one job, but with 2 jobs I make enough. The problem is, since I only worked half a year at my second job, my annual income for 2012 was still short of the poverty level. Add to that, my previous tax returns were also below the poverty level. At the interview, they accepted my I-134 and my level of CURRENT income as enough support for my fiancee. They did not even ask for my co-sponsor information--in fact they handed it back to my fiancee. Her visa was approved without any problem.

That's comforting. Another thing is that my fiance currently has the equivalent of about USD$25,000 in savings that she'll have available to her. I've contacted the Rio de Janeiro consulate to see if they accept documentation of sufficient beneficiary savings as a supplement to my I-134 and tax return evidence. Hoping they do, that'd make it pretty easy and straightforward.

My fiancée is on the U.S. Visa Waiver Program because of her dual citizenship with Brazil and Italy.

I think it's only available to residents of certain countries, specifically European ones.

You can give her those documents way later in the process. My fiancé sent them to me after our NOA2. (around 6 months after he petitionned)

If she visists you, makes sure she can show ties to brazil (they can ask for that at the POE). Read the "Yes you can visit thread" if you need more info on that.

Good luck on your journey!

It is not how much you already earned in the year. So, if your plan is to work a lot in the next 6 months and then quit again to return with her for her interview, that will not work. Just want to make that clear, as what you wrote sounds like maybe you thought it was how much you already earned that year. You need to list your current annual income on the I-134, as in what you are earning at the time you sign the form. It is not past income. You can take how much you make hourly and multiply that by how many hours you work a week. Take how much you make a week and multiply that by 52 weeks to get your current annual income. It needs to be stable, ongoing income. You need to show that you will be earning enough to ensure she will not become a public charge once in the US. When it is time for the I-134, provide a copy of your most recent tax transcript and a letter from your employer plus most recent pay stubs to prove your current income.

So basically what you're saying is that as long as I've been working a job that makes... I don't know... 12 or so dollars an hour... around the time she goes to interview, that I should be fine?

Yes, $12 an hour working full time is more than enough for a household of 2. Include a letter from your employer stating your salary and that the position is permanent. This will show how much you earn and that the income will continue.
