I just purchased my RT flight from BHM to MNL on Delta (I have ff account) $1296.

I purchased Claire's one way (same flight as mine, seats selected together)$1060.

I did not expect it to be half of the RT, but it's ridiculous.

Excuse me, just venting.

I checked the price differences from Buenos Aires to Newark and the one way tickets were actually over $2000 while if I got a round trip ticket it was around $1200-$1500. Go figure....

I hear ya bro. I am checking for my fiancee Manila through to Fort Myers. I've tried Tues-Sat departures and oddly enough Friday is the cheapest. I even checked for S & G's  a round trip her returning late this year and it was double :wow: . Just in case We go back for a visit. Now NO on this visit later this year unless lottery winnings are in my near future.

I didn't have this problem when my husband came here in October from Jordan. He traveled on a one way ticket booked through Delta using Al Italia and the price was equivalent to about $550 US. Round trip fares were well more than double.

Congratulations on buying the tickets!! Won't be long before you get to embrace each other again!! :) :)

Yeah, when we bought ours, we had a slight hiccup. Like you, Raf was going to pick me up so I wouldn't be flying to the US alone. We were booking JAL flights through Priceline. He bought his round-trip ticket first, but when he was buying my one-way, the website wouldn't let him. Turns out JAL requires the purchaser to be part of the flight itinerary. We booked my one-way ticket using my credit card and he sent me money through Xoom to pay it off.

I am (usually) the beneficiary.

Why not just buy the RT and not use the return leg? You will save money. For us the RT was $2100 and the One way was $3200. So what do you think I did? Yep, bought the RT and did not use the return part and just canceled it with the airline.

In this case though, the part that they would be using would be the return leg, and most airlines cancel the entire ticket if the departing leg is not used.

True, but I do not understand why the departing leg would not be used verses the return leg. Why buy a RT ticket where you would use the return leg only? You buy the RT ticket so the departing leg is used and then cancel the leg. Please help me understand what it is that is happening here.

You're doing it wrong.

Your wife can get MUCH cheaper local rates by buying a one way ticket IN THE PHILIPPINES to fly to the U.S. Cost us $662 Manila-->SFO back in January 2011 on PAL.

I think sometimes a round-trip ticket from the US to Manila is cheaper than a one-way from Manila to the US, so in theory, it would be better to buy the round-trip and just use the returning leg. In practice, though, that is impossible. I don't think I've seen a case where a round-trip from Manila to the US is cheaper than a one-way, which is the time that "throw-away ticketing" could be used.

I am (usually) the beneficiary.
