So I first came here on an f1 visa. Money ran out and I almost completed transfer requirements to finish my degree at a 2-year college.. That is my long term plan but won't be anytime soon. I'm 27 now. Came here when I was 21, and obviously under that visa and then becoming a mom, I don't have much work experience. My ead should be here sometime this month I HOPE and I have no idea how I'm going to get hired or what jobs would even consider me. I'm not stupid by any means, but lack of experience at my age seems silly to me :( and I really need to be making money.

So what sort of jobs should. Apply for? Target and the alike to build up experience? Is there any way I could do some office work? I went to school to d journalism and was editor in chief of the school paper.. So I have writing experience in the sense as well as online articles. I don't know if it'll help at all.

Thanks all, help will be so appreciated.

Offices are always looking for admin workers so that might lead to something more your field. Target and Walmart are good as they promote from within. What about a temp agency? You could do a lot of different things, network and find something that way

Good luck, I know it is tough

Thanks so much.. This is a really stupid question but where do I apply for temp agencies? Is there a website with lots online that I can look through?

Agree, sign up with a temp agency. Most will test you on your typing, phone, software (e.g. MS Office) skills to get a gauge of where you are. If possible, check with your local library system to see if they offer free/low-cost software training sessions so you can get up to speed as needed. Community colleges often offer those type of courses as well. You're going to be competing with fresh out of college job seekers, so you'll need to ensure your skills are the latest/greatest.

Where are you located? You can Google "[name of your city] temp agency" to see what comes up. Some of the national agencies are Manpower and Kelly Services.

get into a library. ask for your city's yellow pages. Then look it up, there.

Each agency has a phone number listed, some also have physical address.

When you've compiled your list of telephone numbers, leave the library, and start making phone calls - tell each human you talk to that you want to apply at their agency, and ask for their intake procedures.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I don't know if your interested in the type of work at Starbucks, but they are actually a good company to work for. If you work just 20 hours per week, you are eligible for their health insurance, 401k program, etc. Thats more than a lot of retail type jobs offer their part-time employees. I learned this from some of the people that work there. One guy is a professional photographer and does Starbucks just to get the medical coverage for his family. If you are insured otherwise, it may not be a perk to you.

Starbucks would be awesome.. Honestly it's more about having ANY job than prospects right now, though it's good to know about insurance. I'm hoping to go back to school when I have the money, but I need to make the money first and help my family get much more financially stable.

Not working for so long, ugh it is just so daunting.. Thinking of how many people will be applying for one Starbucks job and knowing I don't have any experience at all. Hopefully my accent will help! Hehe.

Thanks again. I really appreciate all this help.

Nope, searching at the library with a 19 month old wouldn't be too productive.. Maybe on saturday, I'll be sure to let you know :hehe: there's actually a clothes tailoring/cleaning place close by that's open 24/7 needing custmer service reps and willing to train, so I'm going to go there once I get my ead.. A night shift will be great for me with the little one.

Also forgot to say one of the girls at our Starbucks goes to college full time and gets help with her tuition from Starbucks. They hire a lot of people so it's not like there's just one opening. So many work part time to fit their schedules that each store has a lot of workers to cover 4 am to 10 pm seven days a week. You should go to your closest one and introduce yourself to the manager. The store managers tend to work mornings, with shift managers the other times. I bet the accent is a plus.
