Does the mother have citizenship in the US? As far as I can tell as long as this person does not have any US citizen relatives then there is no way to adjust.

Unless he is married to a US citizen or has close family here I see no way to adjust status. The DREAM act may allow him to stay (I am no expert on the exact requirements for it), but will not get him a greencard.

just because he wants to adjust status doesn't mean he can, there is no way that he can adjust status, he cannot even get a work permit with deffered action because the maximum age is 30 for DACA

why didn't his stepfather file for him at the same time he filed for his mother? he would have gotten his GC through his stepfather before they divorced

now it is too late, he will have to wait until there is an immigration reform at best
