Also, one more quick question. None of the guides seem to explain the timegap from marriage, to approval of the AOS/Greencard. I read that it can take a year or two in some cases depending on where you live... so does this mean her status here in the US is okay until that time? Should I be going for something else other than the AOS? I know i need to get her a social security card and some other documents but not sure if there is something I need to keep her here until we get the greencard.

There is no exact answer as to how long it takes to get the Greencard. Wait 2 weeks after your marriage and then go to your local social security office to get the SS card. It will better if you can file your AOS before your I94 expires. Congratulations on your new life!

Follow the AOS guide provided by LeftCoastLady. Adjustment of Status (AOS) IS the next step in the immigration journey for K-1 visa recipients.

Take her to apply for her SSN about 2 weeks after she arrives: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Get married, obtain copies of your certified marriage certificate from the court after your marriage is registered, then follow the guide here on VJ to apply for AOS. It does not take 2 years. She will be in an authorized period of stay when she files the I-485. She will also file the I-765(EAD- employment authorization) and I-131(AP- advance parole). The EAD/AP will allow her to work and re-enter the US when traveling while waiting for her green card approval. The EAD/AP takes about 2-3 months to receive after filing. The green card takes on average 4-8 months.

There is also an AOS forum here on VJ you can read through and ask any questions you might have on the process: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/

Hi guys quick question - I was under the impression that the SS card was getting mailed to your US address, can anyone elaborate on this please?

Those entering with a K-1 do not have the option to have their SSN mailed to them. You must go and apply in person at your local SSA.

Agree with Jay-Kay. Additionally, the new Social Security card is mailed to the US address AFTER the application is processed and approved by the SSA.
