Hey everyone,

So I ready to send in my Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration and along with it, I am confused as to what they mean by certified documents. Is it same as notary? I called my financial institution and they were confused. This is the link to the page that tells me what documents I need My link. Any care to enlighten me as to where I should go? I live in Madison, WI USA

Will it be alright if I just make photocopies of the original documents and than attach a notarized statement saying that the documents are true copies of the original?

Thanks

According to this definition:

A certified copy is a copy (often a photocopy) of a primary document, that has on it an endorsement or certificate that it is a true copy of the primary document. It does not certify that the primary document is genuine, only that it is a true copy of the primary document.

my assumption is that a notary can notarize a copy to make it certified.

I am not sure if they have to MAKE the copy though, or just compare the 2 and certify it.

But, then I'm curious on this step. It says you must provide:

Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page

Does this indicate that you HAVE to notarize a copy of your passport for this step?

Hey if you look under the subheading "Photocopy Requirements" it states "You and each family member immigrating with you must also submit to the NVC a photocopy of the original documents or certified copies of the documents." I am guessing I do not have to get copies of my documents certified since it says photocopy of the original documents "OR" so do you think copies of my original documents like birth certificate will do?

I am confused. You say ' my Application for Immigrant Visa' yet you claim to live in Madison, WI USA .

Why aren't you applying for an Adjustment of Status, instead??

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Hm... I see that now... that's strange, but I know you have to submit originals for NVC stage, regardless of the fact that it seems in that statement that you don't...

I talked to a rep for NVC and she told me to send only the original or certified copies. She said the website information is a mistake.

hey just to let you know i sent in the certified docs to NVC..... im sure you have heard of something called tru copy from india.... i sent that in to NVC and they accepted my docs so if you have tru copies i suggest you sent those in

Thanks, I will call my wife and let her know that its called true copy.

Oh so I suppose this would be like if I lost my birth certificate and had to have them print another one?

Then it would be a certified copy? I've had that done before... though I lost that one too so...

Yes but what you thought of as the original would also have been a certified copy. Other than exceptions like China and a few others, a certified copy is only issued by the government agency holding the original. You do not copy a document yourself and then get the copy certified by somebody.
